***WE ALWAYS HAVE SPACE AND USE FOR WORKAWAYERS WHO COME IN THEIR OWN CAMPERVANS***

    Hi!

My name is Pepa. Me and my 8 year old son Martin live in a horse farm close to Tarragona, Spain. Currently we have 7 horses, 6 ponies, 2 dogs and 2 cats. I run a small NGO dedicated to horses from the perspective of respect and companionship. Horses live in a herd in the outdoor paddocks which are connected to the boxes, they are free to stay in or out at their own will. We are located a 5 to 10 minute walk away from the village of Renau near Tarragona.

Martin's dad passed away in February 2023 and I became a one-parent family. Since then, it is proving difficult for me to find some quality time with my son. I am now in the process of finding ways to resize the entire project so that I can have some quality time with Martin. As I am often busy in my other job and rarely at home, I have handed the volunteer coordination over to my long term workawayer Anneliese, who will manage the team and tasks around the yard.

Martin is an active and playful 8-year-old who absolutely loves mingling with workawayers. He's passionate about football and will instantly become your best friend if you're up for kicking a ball around with him. As a single parent managing both the farm and my other work commitments, I truly value workawayers who genuinely enjoy spending time with children. Martin loves hearing stories from different countries - he often becomes the unofficial welcoming committee! You'll have opportunities to improve your Spanish while experiencing authentic Catalan countryside living, and Martin will be delighted to share his world with you.

I open my stables and home to anyone interested in staying with us a few months and help us take care of the animals. Living with us offers a chance to experience authentic rural Spanish life around horses. You'll learn about horse care including feeding (horses eat hay three times a day and some get dry food twice a day), paddock maintenance, and general animal welfare. Dogs eat twice a day and are wonderful companions around the farm.

As part of farm life, you'll also learn basic property maintenance skills and sustainable living practices in our off-grid environment. These are valuable life skills that many of our returning workawayers have appreciated learning.

Riding in the stables would be allowed for experienced workawayers in their own free time, pending assessment by our riding instructor. We have a dressage arena to ride and a 20m round pen to lunge horses. Volunteers can also join some treks around the countryside with our teacher when they are scheduled and we have spare horses available.

This could be a great opportunity for an individual or a couple with experience caring for horses or willing to spend some time around horses. The daily learning activities are perfectly compatible with an online part-time job (we have wi-fi in certain common areas of the farm).

Workawayers with their own campervan are also welcome, we always have space for campervans and can provide the electricity connection. There is a limit to how much electricity we can provide, as we are off-grid and need to be careful with our consumption. For example, in winter, we do not have enough electricity for using electric heaters, so we use gas heaters ourselves. So if your campervan or caravan uses an electric heating system, you would be better off coming in the summer.

We also have a common area with lounge-diner, bathroom, washing machine, shower, desk for working and a kitchenette.

    Time commitment:
Workawayers participate in farm activities for 3 hours a day (5 days a week) in return for their accommodation. This includes animal care and learning about sustainable farm life alongside us.

For workawayers interested in a more immersive farm life experience, we may occasionally offer the standard Workaway arrangement of 5 hours a day (5 days a week) in exchange for accommodation and food, depending on our current needs and capacity. In this case, we provide your basic groceries and you prepare your own meals.

This is the perfect place for you if you are happy to live in nature and with animals and if you value meaningful cultural exchange. As we are quite remote, public transport options are limited, but this creates a peaceful environment perfect for those who appreciate independence and authentic rural living experiences.

Thanks for reading this far! Looking forward to hearing from you and sharing our way of life with you :)

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

    Sustainable Living Skills:
Learn hands-on about off-grid living, including energy conservation, water management, and sustainable farming practices. Many of our returning volunteers have taken these valuable life skills back to their home countries.
    Natural Horsemanship & Animal Care:
Gain knowledge about horse care, natural herd dynamics, and respectful animal handling techniques. Our NGO approach focuses on companionship rather than dominance, offering a unique perspective on human-animal relationships.
    Rural Spanish Culture:
Experience authentic village life in Catalonia, participate in local traditions, and understand the rhythms of rural Spanish living. The village of Renau offers a genuine glimpse into traditional Spanish countryside culture.
Important Note: As we live in a rural area with limited public transport, workawayers need to be proactive about cultural exchange and meeting people. While we provide opportunities to connect with local families, visit the village pool during summer, and meet people who come to ride horses, the most meaningful cultural exchange happens through your own initiative and openness to engage with the community. This environment is perfect for independent travelers who actively seek authentic experiences rather than expecting organized activities.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

You will stay in a small horse farm in a small Catalan village. The volunteer accommodation is a basic wood cabin that has one small single bedroom, a shared toilet, a common room with another bed and a kitchen. The bed in the common room is a large double that is sectioned off by curtains for privacy. Most of the time there are two volunteers living in this space, and we cannot guarantee which bed you will get, so you need to be happy with either option. We have both male and female volunteers, so you also need to be happy to share this space with the opposite sex. The shower is a few steps away in another building. We have solar panels and our own borehole, so we are very conscious about energy use.

    What else ...

Our stables are in a semi remote location. We live 400m away from a small village, where buses run on very specific hours. Although it is possible to be without a car, it is highly recommended have your own one.
You can walk and cycle , or take a bus/car to the beach, Port Aventura (the amusement park) or Salou/Cambrils. Trains also run to Barcelona every 30 mins, and the fast train (AVE) station is not far from our place.
