  • Description

Hi! I’m Zaynab, 22, from Scotland. I graduated last summer with a degree in International Relations and decided to see as much of the world as I can after uni. Also, job hunting in the UK right now is very hard.

I’ve been living in China for the past five months, and I’m planning to travel more around Asia in March. I speak a bit of Mandarin and a decent amount of Arabic.

In my free time, I love reading non-fiction, listening to podcasts, and weightlifting. I’m curious and open-minded about the world :)

Hello! I'm Miki, 21, from Japan and New Zealand. I'm finishing up my third year at university in Scotland, where I study Persian, Arabic, and International Relations. I'm looking forward to my summer holidays, when I will be joining Zaynab in her travels!

I enjoy travelling because it's a way to meet people from different walks of life. No matter where I go, it's always the people that make it a good time. Also, travel involves new experiences, and new experiences make me feel alive! 😄 I'm eager to do a workaway because I want to meet new people, develop my skills, and make a meaningful contribution to a wider project.

In my free time, I like to surf 🏄‍♂️, play volleyball 🏐, and improve my language skills (Persian and Arabic).
I would describe myself as kind, hard-working, and easy-going.

  • More details about your skills

    Teaching English
Zaynab: I’ve been working as a private English tutor in Shanghai for the past five months, teaching children aged 2–12. I’ve also spent a few weeks as a cover teacher in international schools, and previously worked at summer camps across Europe focused on English conversation practice. I’m comfortable adapting lessons for different ages, levels, and learning styles.
Miki: I have volunteered as an online English teacher for refugee children aged 7-12 in the UK. I have also volunteered as a Persian-English and Arabic-English interpreter at a charity for refugees in the UK.

    Hospitality
Zaynab: I have over a year of experience in hospitality in the UK, including barista work and bar shifts. I’m used to fast-paced environments, customer-facing roles, and working as part of a team.

    Farming & Gardening
Miki: I volunteered at an ecological restoration project in rural Jordan. This involved watering plants, picking vegetables, and moving around construction materials whilst living in a shed on a permaculture farm.

    Social media management
Miki: I was the social media manager for two cultural societies at my university. Using the graphic design application 'Canva', I redesigned the visual identity of both societies, and I even created a new society logo. I regularly uploaded Instagram stories and posts advertising society events. I also interned with the university museum to promote one of their exhibitions; this involved a 24h 'takeover' of the university's instagram story.

    Research & Project Work
Zaynab: I worked as a university research intern, where I collected first-hand data through interviews with staff and students. I planned and carried out a detailed project advising the university on how to improve support for Widening Access students.
Miki: As part of a paid research internship, I designed and implemented a 6-week research project about Syrian refugee integration in Jordan. I conducted in-person fieldwork (interviews) in Jordan.

  • Age

    22 & 21

  • What else ...

    What inspires me
Miki: I'm still figuring out my place in this world, but I am certain of one thing: helping others brings me great joy. 😊 When I volunteered last summer as an interpreter for refugees, my contributions were making a direct positive impact on their circumstances. It's hard to put words to the feeling this gave me. I felt warm and fulfilled. In the future, I see myself working in support of vulnerable people.
