  • Description

    Hiya!

My name is Xenia, and I'm currently training to be a high school English teacher, because I love language and literature, and because it is important to me to do something with a purpose, by supporting young people to get the best possible start into adult life! I really love working with children and I hope to be able to give something back by supporting them the best I can.

My motivation to travel with workaway is to spend time immersed in cultures other than my own, and to do something completely different to the sitting-down-indoor work and studying I've been doing for the past few years. Because of this, I'd love to do more physically active work outdoors in nature, ideally with animals (I love animals) - to find more balance and explore facettes of life that I've missed out on so far. And most importantly, I want to do something that contributes to the well-being of the world we live in, be it the natural environment, the animals we share it with, or other people.

Aside from this, what brings me joy is learning about and from people of all different walks of life (although I tend to be a bit shy at first, but that doesn't mean I'm not interested!) being creative in many ways from writing, to podcasting, to photography, to cooking. And I adore dancing to live music.

  • More details about your skills

I grew up in Switzerland and studied English and cultural studies at uni, so I'm fluent in German and English. I also speak some French and a tiny bit of Greek.

Because I've created a lot of independent projects both at uni and in my spare time, I'm very good at planning, scheduling, and realising longer and sometimes difficult projects. And I don't give up on them just because they get a bit tricky!
Here are some of the projects I've done:
-researching, recording, and editing my own little podcast
-field research where I organised and conducted interviews
    -long research papers
    -co-organising a local music festival
    - making an experimental short film

I have several years of experience in teaching children and teenagers, so I have a lot of practice and patience in explaining things, but also in interacting with people in general. Also, if you'd like to learn some German, I'd be happy and able to help with that!

Regarding more practical skills, I helped my family renovate our grandparents' house in Greece, where I did jobs like painting walls or sanding down and repainting furniture. In addition, I can do all the typical chores around the house: cleaning, laundry, etc. I've also had a passion for cooking and baking since I was a teenager, so I'm a pretty good amateur cook and baker.

  • What else ...

I love exploring new places on foot, be it strolling through cities for hours and stumbling upon hidden gems, or experiencing nature up close on hikes and walks. It is the best way to really get to know a place and soak up the atmosphere. Plus, there is plenty of time to take photos!

I adore stories and storytelling in all forms: from film and tv, books, to mythology, to people sharing their own experiences - I can't get enough of it! Because of this I'm also super interested in folklore, local stories and histories and would love to learn about yours!
