Description
Dear Family,
My name is Rebecca Young and I have two children. Olivia is currently 11 years old and Torsten is 9 years old. We are planning a trip to Europe for May and June of 2026. The kids will be 12 and 10 by then. I was able to take some time off of work and am looking forward to sharing my love of languages and travel with my kids. My husband is going to join us in Norway for part of July 2026 before we all fly back to Canada together.
We will be spending May in France and June in Germany. My kids go to a Francophone school in London, Ontario and I teach grade 1 French immersion at another local scool. We are able to communicate in French, even though we have anglophone accents:)
We also have been attending a German language school on Saturdays for the past few years. I lived in Saarbruecken and Ulm for about a year and a half in my 20's, so my German is a little rusty, but I am looking forward to practicing and rediscovering German culture with my kids. My kids can understand much more than they let on:) They just need time to further explore and develop their German vocabulary. We spent three weeks in July 2023 visiting friends near Ulm, so that was a great introduction to German culture and life.
This summer, my kids and I are travelling to Quebec to volunteer for a week at an inn and a week at a farm so we can give back to others, while also improving our French. We are so excited to learn some new skills, to meet new people and to share out time and effort to help other like-minded people.
Many things bring us joy. We like the quiet moments, sitting together, reading, playing games and just chatting. Olivia loves to read and see plays at our local theatre. Torsten is a social butterfly, and can't stop talking once he has started. He asks a lot of great questions and enjoys learning new things. I love exploring new places, learning about the people, local history, and making my world just a little bigger each day. We love Haribo candy, chiken schnitzel, and currywurst:) Torsten doesn't like ketchup or tomato sauce, but give him a Bratwurst and he is in heaven.
We are looking for a family with (or without kids) who would be willing to share their day to day life with us. If you have kids, we would love to practice English with them, play games and just have fun. We can run errands, but I must worn you that I only know how to drive automatic cars which I know is hard to find in Europe. We can take care of the kids, help with the household, clean, do laundry, and basic meal prep. When at home, my husband does most of the cooking because he works from home and I do most of the driving since we only have one car and I need it for work. That said, I can help out with meal prep and can do some basic meals. We are trying to eat less processed food these days and take advantage of locally sourced fruit and vegetables when in season. We are looking for a slower pace to life so we can take the time to explore, connect, and build friendships along the way.

I am currently a Grade 1 French immersion teacher which means that 80 percent of my day is taught in French and 20 percent is taught in English. I can always interested in improving my French especially since I tend to use only basic phrases, expressions, and vocabulary with my young students. My kids go to a Francophone school and are able to communicate well in French. We are also interested in learning more German. My kids can understand a lot more than they think but lack the confidence to speak it because their French is so much better. That said, they have had more exposure to French because of school and travel opportunities to Quebec. I want to show them they are capable in German and that learning new things in German is just as exciting. I am hoping to help them improve their confidence in German and perhaps encourage them to even learn another language they are interested in.

Allergies
Olivia is allergic to latex. Rebecca is allergic to fish.
Special dietary requirements
Olivia still might have her braces on when we are in Europe. If so, she needs to be careful not to eat nuts and hard things as this could damage her braces. We can chat about this more in depth at a later date.
