  • Description

Hi! I’m Matt from Hong Kong. I am currently taking a half-year gap from my studies after having studied in both Hong Kong and Sweden.

Although I come from a big city, I feel that I connect more with nature. I always look to venture into the outdoors during my free time. That’s also why 2 years ago, I stayed in a farm in Nagano, Japan for 2 months, working in an orchard doing hands-on outdoor work, which included weeding, picking fruits and maintenance work. This previous working holiday experience taught me the satisfaction of physical labor and sustainable living, and I find myself a lot more confident with hands-on tasks, and to be skilful in practical things. And of course, bonds formed with fellow volunteers from around the world.

Moreover, I work as a part-time tutor to financially sustain my travels, and have participated in various (salaried and pro bono) teaching projects throughout my university life. They range from academic (English and Mathematics), Legal Education and Career and Life Education. I would be more than delighted to do teaching as part of my volunteer work.

I love traveling and meeting people from diverse cultures. To me, traveling is more than just seeing new places—it’s about connecting with people from all walks of life, and growing as a person through understanding different perspectives and stepping outside my comfort zone. Through my travels in Europe and Asia, I have stayed in many hostels worldwide and also appreciate how important it is to create a friendly atmosphere and support the team with reception, cleaning, maintenance, or organizing activities.

My mother tongue is Cantonese. I also speak English and Mandarin fluently and have basic Spanish which I’m actively improving to communicate better with locals and fellow travelers.

Besides travelling, I’m a total outdoor enthusiast—nothing beats lacing up my boots for a good hike or chasing sunsets in the mountains. I just wrapped up the epic Tour du Mont Blanc this September, and Patagonia has been my dream destination forever—those jagged peaks and endless trails are calling my name. Whether it’s swapping trail stories over mate, helping plan excursions, or just geeking out about nature’s wonders, I’d love to bring that energy to hosts and travelers alike.

More details about my language interests
I am very excited to continue learning español because it opens doors to a rich culture and allows me to connect more deeply with people across Latin America. I love the challenge of picking up new languages and improving my communication skills, especially through real-life conversation and cultural immersion. At the same time, I am happy to share my knowledge by teaching English and Chinese, both of which I speak fluently as a native speaker.

  • More details about your skills

I have hands-on experience helping out on farms, including a month-long working holiday in Nagano, Japan, where I actively participated in daily farm tasks and gained practical skills in outdoor manual work. This experience taught me to be hardworking, reliable, and adaptable to physical demands.

In addition to farm work, I have extensive volunteering experience in teaching roles, where I developed strong communication and interpersonal skills. I’m comfortable engaging with people of all ages and backgrounds, and I enjoy creating positive, supportive environments for learning and cultural exchange.

Having traveled widely and completed exchange studies in Sweden, I am confident in my ability to communicate effectively with people from all over the world. This has helped me develop cultural sensitivity, patience, and openness—qualities that make me a friendly and approachable volunteer who can easily integrate into diverse teams and communities.

I am passionate about exploring mountains and connecting with nature, which is why hiking in Patagonia, both in Chile and Argentina, is a dream of mine. I also enjoy board games and social activities that bring people together, making every experience richer and more memorable.
