Hi, my name is Jelien. This year I am taking a gap year. I want to figure who I am before I go to study and I thought is there a better way to do this than to volunteer! I speak almost fluently English. I am still practicing my French and German, but I can find find my way in both languages.
I've been caring for and riding horses for about 10 years now and horses are one of my biggest passion. I think the most beautiful thing about horses is the connection you can form with them. I have leased horses for the last 3 years.
I have some basic gardening skills as I help my father in the garden sometimes.
I know how to keep a home clean and I can do the basic indoor tasks.
I can also cook a bit, but I'm still learning!
But most of all, I'm a hard worker and a fast learner.

I had an amazing time with Iris and Dirk! They were excellent hosts and I liked helping them on the farm. It was a nice and calm environment and the work was fair. The little studio was very clean and lovely decorated. The animals were such cuties. I would very much recommend staying with them!

You stayed with us—Iris and Dirk—in Italy from September 7th to September 23rd. You arrived straight from Rome with a large backpack, having already spent a week there with friends. But in Poggio Mirteto, you suddenly found yourself alone in the studio at our ranch. Every day, you were a great help to us—initially with caring for the horses, and … read more also by tackling countless chores like gathering kindling, clearing away huge amounts of plastic, and sweeping up. In exchange for your help, you joined us for lunch every day. These meals sparked fun and interesting conversations that gave us a real insight into who you are. You are an intelligent young woman who discusses a wide range of topics with others in your own clever way. We really appreciated that and encourage you to keep doing it. You also showed initiative by going for hikes—encounters with wild boars, a lost GPS signal, and losing your way notwithstanding. None of this stopped you from pushing on to reach the mountain peak and, fortunately, making it back to our ranch by late afternoon. We wish you all the best for the coming year—enjoy your adventures and your freedom.

Van 7 september tot en met 23 september was je bij ons, Iris en Dirk, in Italië. Je kwam rechtstreeks uit Rome met een grote rugzak, omdat je daar al een week verbleef met jouw vrienden en vriendinnen. Maar in Poggio Mirteto was je opeens alleen in onze studio op onze ranch. Iedere dag heb je ons goed meegeholpen met in eerste instantie het verzorgen van de paarden en daarnaast ook talloze klusjes als aanmaakhout verzamelen, enorme hoeveelheden plastic opruimen en de boel aanvegen. In ruil voor jouw hulp kon je iedere dag gezellig bij ons lunchen. Tijdens deze maaltijden ontstonden er leuke en interessante gesprekken waarbij wij een goede indruk kregen van de persoon Jelien. Jij bent een intelligente jonge vrouw die vele gespreksonderwerpen op een eigen en slimme manier met je medemens bediscussieert. Wij vonden dat aangenaam en moedigen jou aan dit te blijven doen. Ook toonde je initiatief door af en toe te gaan wandelen, waarbij je wilde zwijnen tegenkwam, je gps-signaal verloor, de weg kwijt was. Dit weerhield je er niet van door te zetten om de top te bereiken en gelukkig eind van de middag weer bij ons op de ranch terug te keren. Wij wensen jou het allerbeste in het komende jaar en geniet van jouw avonturen en vrijheid.
