Hi there, I'm Jack. In 2024 I took a 9 month trip to South East Asia that changed my perspective on travel.

I quickly grew tired of the typical backpacking trail and wanted to seek a deeper connection to the cultures I was seeing. So, I opted for teaching projects in rural Cambodia and Indonesia which gave me a truly authentic experience that I couldn't put a price on. Working with these communities also gave me a great insight into commodities that we take for granted in the west: equal access to education, opportunity, hygiene, safety and pollution management.

Since returning from this trip, I am now wanting to experience more, and I can't wait to contribute to future projects.

I am also a website developer by trade and would love to use my skills to help small businesses with marketing, content creation and website design. I also passionate about learning and teaching foreign languages.

More details about my language interests
I've always been passionate about learning languages. When asked "what super power would you choose" I'd always answer with "to be able to speak every language". I think sharing languages is the purest way of connecting deeply with people and their culture. I have been learning Spanish for the last six months and hope to move to a Spanish-speaking country one day to completely immerse myself! I suppose my interest in learning languages also drives me to teach languages. I've always been fond of supporting those around me to learn. And now that I am learning a language, I am in the unique position of knowing exactly what students will struggle with and what they need to achieve their goals.

Tutoring and teaching:
I have a Level 5 TEFL qualification.
I have taught English as a foreign language in a range of environments; a public school class of 60 grade 9 students; a charity school for 10 year-olds with little to no English; and a conversation class for young adults.
I have a deep understanding of phonetics and pronunciation thanks to a research project I was apart of.

Technology:
I am a software developer as my day job and have plenty of experience with building and designing websites. I have also run digital marketing and content creation campaigns to boost rankings in SEO.

I volunteered here in January 2025, and it was by far the highlight of my trip.

First of all, the hospitality from Searey, wife Sreyran and children Lina and Mongkol is incredible. They are always kind and smiling, including us in family events, and making sure we are looked after. During my time, I was invited to birthday parties, weddings,… read more funerals and buddhists ceremonies. You’ll be hanging out at their home during the day, kept company by Lina and Mongkol, eating delicious food cooked by Searey and Sreyran. And all of this gave me the most authentic cultural experience. The local community is also amazing. Family and friends of Searey will always be inviting you to hang out, play volleyball, eat, drink and sing karaoke.

There is a mix of teaching that you can be involved with. They run a school at the local pagoda for 5-12 year-olds who are split into 2-3 classes (depending on the number of teachers available). These students are about A1-A2 level. Then there is the older 15-16 year-olds and above who have an evening class in the newly built classroom/cafe behind Searey’s home. What makes this class a bit more difficult is the range of abilities, from about A2-B2.

The students themselves are kind and welcoming. They inspired and motivated me to work hard each day. I could see how much the opportunity of having good English speakers means to them, which is a privilege that many families cannot afford. Over the 10 weeks I spent here, I got to know my students very well. We shared many laughs, good memories, and I became thoroughly invested in their futures.

I think there are definitely improvements that the project needs. Students do not follow a curriculum and there is no record kept of student progress or what they have been previously taught. You are responsible for planning and teaching the lessons. You have teaching aides in the A1-A2 classes but these are students of the conversation class and their English level is not much greater than the students, so communicating your instructions to the class can sometimes be challenging.

This is no fault of Searey. He is running this project entirely by himself, after seeing the generational poverty that the local community suffers from - there is little funding for hiring full-time staff. So, this as a great opportunity to make a difference where it is really needed, in a community that will return your kindness 10x over.

Jack is exceptionally helpful with Website improvements , and physical building work when required. He also utilised his worldwide contacts to contribute books for our School kids , from his Rotarian sister in Australia ... which was very thoughtful.
