  • Description

Hi, my name is Georgie, I am 26 and from the UK. I am about to begin my five month sabbatical leave from full time employment and I am looking forward to exploring parts of the world I have never been to before! As part of this experience, I would really like to learn through practical experiences and connect with new people which I hope to obtain through Workaway. I have a deep love for animals and for nature, in my day job back home I am an ecologist, and I love being outside in all weathers! I am a hard-worker, and an easy-going, kind person who likes to meet new people but I am also very contented with my own company. Thank you for taking the time to read my profile!

  • More details about your skills

I have grown up surrounded by dogs, cats and poultry including chickens, ducks and geese and I am well versed in their care. Additionally, I have some experience working with cows and sheep and I am always keen to learn more about their care and interacting with them. I have previously worked in a dog kennels and cattery, which also looked after rabbits and other small pets, meaning I have experience in looking after these animals, and carrying out the following tasks including feeding, walking, socialising, cleaning and importantly giving them love and attention.

Both through past employment working in a nature reserve, and growing up where I have, I have experience in practical habitat management for conservation, and a variety of manual tasks outside. In the past, this has included scrub clearance, using either machinery such as strimmers or manual hand tools, hedge cutting and gardening tasks including weeding, grass cutting, making new borders, propagating, and trimming back shrubs. Also, as part of my previous employment I was able to undertake training in the traditional practices of hedge - laying and dry stone walling, which I admit I am a beginner at, but I find traditional tasks like this very interesting and a way to connect with the past.

In my day-to-day job as an ecologist, I am typically out and about onsite, conducting surveys usually in all weathers throughout the year. Sometimes, this can involve navigating difficult terrains, and usually means I am out walking fair distances each day, so physically tasks should not be a problem for me. I am very keen to learn more about sustainable eco-living, and desperate to learn about the native wildlife and nature in Oceania !

I have also worked in customer-facing roles including as a sales assistant in a pharmacy, and waitress at a tea room which I really enjoyed and they have taught me clear communication and problem-solving skills.

  • What else ...

Back in the UK I am an avid nature and history-lover, and I love going on walks with my dog and my binoculars. I have never visited NZ or Oceania before and look forward to experiencing some of the wildlife on offer there. I have previously kept bees, which is something I would love to continue with once I return from my travels. I also love swimming, hiking and visiting new places. In my spare time I also do volunteering for a local environmental charity, which involves carrying out kick sampling at my local river to monitor the freshwater invertebrate populations. Also, growing up I was a keen scout, and have also been a young leader for beaver group (ages 6-9) which involved helping out in evening sessions doing a variety of activities.
