  • Description

Hi! I’m Flor, originally from Tierra del Fuego in southern Argentina. I grew up in a small city surrounded by mountains and the sea, and I spent a lot of my time outdoors, camping, hiking and snowboarding.

I’ve been travelling since I was 15, when I first left Argentina to spend a year as an exchange student in the Netherlands. Since then, travelling, working and living in different countries have become a big part of my life.

I’m a calm, independent and easy-going person, but also proactive and energetic when there is something to be done. I’m naturally curious and enjoy learning new things and figuring things out for myself. I’m also practical and hands-on, and I don’t mind getting my hands dirty. I like work where you can actually see the result at the end of the day.

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations and Business Communications and a Level 5 TEFL qualification. I have more than ten years of experience in hospitality, working in Argentina, Sweden, Australia and the USA in roles ranging from restaurants and reception to guest services, management and HR. I have also worked in seasonal and resort environments, so I’m used to adapting quickly, working with different people and taking responsibility.

Over the years I’ve also done a bit of everything outside my main professional work: painting, cleaning, babysitting, construction, hostel work and other practical tasks. I’m comfortable using tools and have experience with things such as drills, angle grinders and various hand tools. I’m happy to learn how to use new tools or take on tasks I haven’t done before, and I’m not afraid to ask for instructions when something requires a particular method.

    My Workaway and exchange experience

I’ve been doing work exchanges for several years and have already had exchanges in Brazil (2018), Hungary (2020), Sweden (2020) and Turkey (2020). Some were arranged through Workaway and others independently, but they all involved the same kind of exchange: living with or alongside local people, contributing with practical work and becoming part of everyday life rather than simply visiting as a tourist.

I’m also currently doing another work exchange in Scotland, arranged privately rather than through Workaway. I live with my hosts and help with cleaning, cooking, mowing the lawn, painting, looking after the cats, walking the dog and housesitting. One of the cats needs daily medication, so I’ve also had responsibility for following care routines and looking after the home while my hosts are away. My current hosts would be happy to provide a reference, and I can also provide references from previous experiences.

These experiences are one of the reasons I enjoy work exchanges so much. I already know that living with other people, sharing responsibilities and adapting to someone else’s routines is very different from simply travelling somewhere. I really enjoy that part of it.

I have quite a lot of experience living in shared accommodation. When working seasonal jobs, I regularly lived in shared staff accommodation, and I have also shared accommodation while travelling.

I’m respectful of other people’s space and routines, clean and tidy, and comfortable living communally. At the same time, I’m very independent and don’t need constant supervision. I’m happy to follow instructions and established routines, and if something isn’t right or I’m unsure about something, I prefer to communicate rather than make assumptions.

I love cooking and trying new recipes. I mostly follow a plant-based, gluten-free diet, although I’m not strict about it, and I’m perfectly happy cooking meat if that’s what everyone else is eating. I’m also very interested in wellness, nutrition and healthy living. I enjoy exercising and trying different forms of training, and I’ve read quite a few books on nutrition, health and wellbeing, so I’m always happy to recommend something if that’s an interest we share.

Outside of work and travelling, I love mountain biking (enduro and downhill), snowboarding, board games, music and podcasts. I’m generally happiest when I’m doing something active, learning something new or exploring somewhere I haven’t been before.

    Why I’m travelling

I’m currently in Europe after spending the last three years living and working in Australia. I’m an Italian citizen and am currently finalising the administrative steps for my Italian documents.

I’m planning to spend some time in Italy because I’d like to learn Italian, and I think staying with local people and being part of everyday life would be a great way to do that. I’m particularly interested in longer stays where I can get to know the people and the place rather than constantly moving from one place to another.

I’m travelling independently and am flexible about the type of exchange. I’m happy to help with practical work, cooking, household tasks, painting, renovation, maintenance or other projects where I can be useful. I enjoy learning new things, so I’m also happy to try something completely new if someone is willing to show me how.

What I like most about work exchanges is the exchange itself: contributing something useful while learning from the people and place around me. Every experience has been different, and I’ve enjoyed meeting different people, learning new skills and experiencing everyday life in places I might never have known otherwise.

I’m looking forward to seeing where the next exchange takes me and to meeting some new people along the way.
