Volunteering is the best way to travel.

Hi! My name is Denise. I’m 19 years old, from the Philippines, and I’m currently studying veterinary medicine in Romania.

I moved alone to Romania almost a year ago thanks to a scholarship. Starting over in a new country is both scary and exciting, but being able to call my family back home made settling down easier. After I adjusted to the climate, the language, and the foods. I decided to work part-time at a local pub. I never expected that that would be my first job because it's very far from my personality, but it offers enough flexibility to work and study at the same time. I was able to manage since I only take the Romanian language course once a day. So I would attend class in the morning and work in the evening. I stayed behind the bar mixing drinks, pouring beers, and washing dishes, which doesn't sound too difficult until I have to do it for hours with very little break. Some days are fun, while some days are very tiring. It was interesting to see the Romanian nightlife; they dance in circles as if they choreographed it beforehand and drink a lot of beers. Working also taught me to appreciate the people in the workforce more.

After I saved up enough money, I left the job to go for summer vacation. I applied to a volunteering program of the European Solidarity Corps and got accepted in Hungary. There I spent two weeks helping with the construction of the social farm. I helped with varnishing and smoothing the wood, painting, making the roof, and much more. My fellow volunteers came from different countries in Europe; they were spontaneous and knowledgeable. Their confidence inspired me to be more confident with myself. After that, I went to my first workaway in the north of Holland, where I helped mostly with household chores. Needless to say, I love this kind of travelling. It brings me closer to culture and the people. Now, I am studying veterinary medicine in Romanian language and got featured in three national tv stations because of that.
