  • Description

Hi, I’m Abbey! I am a 25 year old from the US and this is the beginning of my travels! I finished university in 2022 and worked in a marketing job for 2.5 years before realizing that I wanted to completely change my life. I left that job and started pursuing work that kept me on my feet and talking to people all day long. I now work as a barista at a coffee roastery, a barback at a cocktail bar, and as a cellar hand/bartender at a winery. These jobs have allowed me to feel more connected to a community and get to know a wide array of people from all over. I’m now looking to travel the world and learn new skills.

Just in the past year, I have developed a deep passion for wine. After working with it in my service jobs and volunteering during harvest, I’ve found the production aspects of it fascinating and how it’s an industry that can take you all over the world and connect you to variety of cultures & people. I was drawn to wine by the art, history and science of it. I've come to understand that I excel in work that allows me to be creative and also experimental, and working with wine allows me to do that. I’m eager to learn more about how wine is made in other countries and deepen my understanding of other cultures and the environment of how it's made.

In my free time, I like to be outside as much as possible. I enjoy biking around my city, long walks, running, rock climbing, listening to live music, drinking wine & eating delicious food with friends, dancing, cooking/baking, and reading. During my future Workaway experiences, I would love the opportunity to learn new languages. I have taken a couple years of Spanish in the past, so I can pick up on it in writing, but I would love to improve my speaking. I would also love to learn more agricultural knowledge/gardening. I have volunteered in some wine cellars, but I have no experience in vineyards or in any farms. However, I am a pretty fast learner! I have worked some pretty fast-paced jobs and am adaptable, cooperative and hardworking.

  • More details about your skills

During my work in marketing/communications and in service, I’ve excelled in how to meet and effectively communicate to new people. Both areas of work have taught me how to be super organized and efficient in my work and allowed space for creativity. Working in service, I’ve had to upkeep the maintenance of the space, attend to guests at all times. When I began to work in coffee and wine, I was taught how to be in touch with my senses, whether it was participating in a wine tasting or a coffee cupping ritual. Learning how to pick up notes from all senses is crucial to learn what you’re working with.

When I did some wine cellar work this past fall, I learned how to sous the barrels, sort the grapes, learn how to use a pump, fermentation tested, etc. I’ve learned there are a lot of parts that go into wine production, and I look forward to expanding my knowledge.

I’m an extremely hard worker and hands-on learner. I always aim to give 100% in everything I do.
