Description

I started to travel after high school with very few plans or expectations. After visiting a few countries I now want to get deeper into the actual culture of a place, not just visit the famous spots. I want to have my perspective on life challenged so I can better develop my own, and see what local life is like beyond what the media shows. Food is my favorite way of connecting to others when abroad, as well as learning about rural life (as I come from a small village in England). I have a big interest in environmental science (potentially going to study at university) and would love to develop my knowledge of permaculture and organic farming. I always try and learn as much as I can from the people I meet, no matter who they are. Connecting with others has become my greatest joy when travelling, and I hope workaway will provide me with more opportunities for this :)

A-levels - I completed my A-levels in chemistry, biology and geography last year in England and got three As. I take pride in learning about new topics from the people I meet travelling, and love to share my own knowledge as well.

Sports - I play rugby and cricket in England, and love to keep fit. I have worked physical, outdoor jobs with my Dad in England so I have no problems with manual work. My Dad's side of family were farmers so I have a great interest in agriculture and rural life.

Cooking - I LOVE to cook and learn about cuisine, and cook regularly for my family in England, making dishes from all over the world. Any opportunity to simply chop veg or work with a new ingredient is great for me.

Cleaning - when I was in high school I worked part-time as a school cleaner. This made me appreciate cleanliness and treating shared places with respect.

English teaching - I am currently completing an online TEFL course, and would embrace the opportunity to help teach others English if they would like.

This was my first workaway experience and it couldn't have been better. The farm work operates on a 2 day on, 1 day off system. On work days we worked a few hours in the morning, followed by a long afternoon break, and then a few more hours in the afternoon. The work will of course vary with the time of year you visit. I visited in May and found … read more the work varied and never too difficult or strenuous. The farm also had some new baby goats which were really rewarding to see develop in the 3 weeks I was at the farm, from not being able to feed off their mum to walking and feeding independently. This experience gave me a new perspective on how the food we eat is produced, and the effort that goes into it by Nepalese farmers.

On your days of there a plenty of nice things to do around the farm. Their is a lassi place just a 2 minute walk from the house, as well as a cafe roughly a 20min walk away which serves a range of food and drink. I used this cafe for some online work as I found the WiFi connection very good. Having said that the WiFi connection inside the main house also was fairly reliable aside from during storms. There is a very peaceful walk to Nammobuddha monastry which I did multiple times during my stay. It would also be great to trial run. You can also get a bus to Dhulikhel and explore the area (thank you Gabriel for showing me the samosa spot near the hospital :)

The food was amazing. I have a big appetite and never went hungry. For dinner we usually had dal bhat (standard Nepalese dish of rice and lentils). This came with potatoes and green veggies. Sometimes the family would also cook eggs as well. If you would like more protein I'm sure the family would be willing to cook eggs if you buy them each night. Eggs will be very affordable if you have lived in European countries. We would also sometimes have other Nepalese dishes, all of which were incredibly delicious (Apsara's biriyani was a highlight). The food I had here was some of the best I had in Nepal, it had a home-cooked style which you can't get anywhere else. For breakfast we had toast with spread (and eggs provided on days off). I found this fine though given the massive portion of dal bhat I would eat the night before lol. Again if you would like other things for breakfast you can buy it yourself and use the cooking area.

The best part of this experience was the family though. I had been traveling for 4 months prior to visiting and they were some the most kind, selfless and humble people I had met. As a 19 year old from England travelling for the first time, they left a genuine impact on me which will never go away, which is the true benefit of traveling.

Please be aware that the 7USD daily contribution directly supports the family. They have been through some tough times with the 2015 earthquake and recent hailstorms. Please read the description and other reviews to get a sense of the food and accommodation. If you don't feel comfortable paying this then don't visit. Don't go in with unrealistic expectations just because you are paying 7USD a day.
