Hi everybody !

I'm Ulli, 35 years old and originally from Germany.
I left Germany at the age of 19 and have been traveling the world on my solo trip since March 2019.

I am a trained cook/patissier/cake designer with 14 years of professional experience, but I am not looking for kitchen jobs - I would like to strengthen other skills and broaden my horizons in other areas.
But I have no problem if cooking would be part of my work, just not full time.

Projects and places that interest me:
The workplace can be very remote, I have already been able to work in many remote places and even though I love and enjoy city life, I also really enjoy the silence in nature.
I am interested in art and photography.
I like working with my hands, I am physically fit and I love to exercise physically and I am not afraid of hard work.
I like to help and support people who need help.
I am interested in holistic health and am currently completing my training as an epigenetics coach.
I am also interested in places that are self-sufficient, I would like to learn more about them and support people in developing their projects further.
Being out in nature and expanding my knowledge of wild plants and herbs to then use them in the kitchen or to make medicinal tinctures is one of biggest joys at the moment.
I also have a lot of experience in animal care of all kinds (horses, sheep, dogs, cats, cows etc.)

There is no timeline or exact direction, i travel flexibly and always look for new adventures and projects - I love to learn and grow with each new experience.

I've been working since i was 16 years old and i also moved home from this age - Self-employment is therefore one of my strengths.

In addition to my main job, I tried out and got to know many different jobs during my long-term trip. These included: building a house on a Norwegian island (out of wood), building miles of barbed wire fences in the Australian outback, sheep and cattle mustering, planting trees and building water systems for them, training and caring for dogs, gardening, cooking for retreats, selling souvenirs, welcoming and caring for guests, preparing Airbnb accommodations, etc.

I work very carefully and know how to organize myself and other things well.

Furthermore, I grew up in the countryside and am well acquainted with harvesting and fieldwork of fruits and vegetables. Working with animals doesn't cause me any problems (no allergies) - for some animals, I would certainly need a short briefing but I learn very fast.

Photography has been one of my hobbies, and I also have my equipment with me. If you want i can make pictures from your home or business ( for the Homepage ) or i also can try to make portraits of you. I am currently continuing my education in the field of holistic health. I started my training as an epigenetic coach in June 2024 and I continue to educate myself outside of that because I find this whole topic extremely exciting. Starting with healthy nutrition, genetics, meditation, heavy metals, frequencies, through to energetic healing and medical directions such as Ayurveda and TCM.

Why i am by workaway - on one hand to reduce the travel costs, on the other hand, i want to get to know as many people as possible on my journey, to help them where i can and to expand my knowledge in many areas - I love to gain new experiences and traveling is the best opportunity for that :)
In general i don't have any special plans, I am easygoing, flexible and ready for everything! :)

Elena and (Captain) Frode,

where should I start describing my time with them and where should I start saying thank you, for all this beautiful and eventful time.

There are almost no skills are not needed in this project, so if you think about how you could help, then let me tell you that there is always plenty of work to do, in many areas like… read more cooking, cleaning, gardening, construction, marketing/social media - because Elena has many creative ideas and equally big plans for the future of this island.
I always had great pleasure in following her thoughts and being able to imagine the result in my mind.
She is one of the strongest women I've personally met, she doesn't let others get her down and always pursues her goals and dreams. Elena knows exactly what she wants and I love her way of details, even if they are so small, which makes working together very pleasant - on the other hand, she and Frode are always open to new ideas and changes, if they have positive effects for the project's.

Frode, or as I affectionately call him, Captain Frode, Elena's better half, is one of the coolest person I've had the pleasure of meeting. I felt this man had already lived 4 lives, in one of them he was certainly a pirate - and still is in his heart - that's why he probably deserves the title of captain ;) He is an excellent carpenter and knows how to work with wood like no other. I learned a lot from him and really had a lot of fun building a new building with him from scratch. Stay tuned for his stories. because he has more than enough of these in his luggage - you will be entertained deliciously, I promise.

The two are excellent examples of the fact that age doesn't matter, neither to find great love, to tackle new projects, to fulfill one's own dreams and to be curious about life again and again and again.

For the new workawayers : there is work waiting for you - a lot of work - but you will live in an unique place and learn new things and meet great people. Be proactive and organized so you not only make life easier for yourself but also for others on the island. Elena and Frode have a lot of understanding for many things and always make sure that the work is varied and balanced - living and working together is always give and take on the island, don't take it for granted - then you will also have a great time there, promised :)

I can hardly wait to travel back to the island at some point to see what has happened in the past and what ideas and thoughts Elena's has implemented.

Thank you very much Elena and Captain Frode, for the inspiring, adventurous and challenging 3 1/2 months, I wish you only the best :)) 🌸 🐳 🍻

Ulli, where to begin…..

Bottom line is, when she contacts you for a volunteering position, IMMEDIATLY agree!

This girl brings the German work spirit, combined with a whole array of trades and skills to your place.
Seamlessly she fitted in our work ethic, became one with the crew, doing her jobs fast, with joy and pride, making proposals along… read more the way. Not only that, when there was time left she always found herself more small and bigger things to do. What she doesn’t know in a job she will ask and then perform it the way you want it done. She’s a fast learner and the word “impossible” is not in her dictionary!
Her creative mind always came up with solutions or parts thereof, she has lots and lots of energy, and a joke is always around the corner.

Eager to learn everything about dog behavior, dog language and dog handling she quickly became friends with a wide array of dogs. Ours, of clients and/or those of rescue organizations.
Specifically the latter are always (stray)dogs with a (unknown) history and past and may react in ways one never saw before. Her love and feeling for them was heartwarming, mostly having one (or more) staying in her quarters.

The usual jobs on a Dog Resort (not always the most pleasant ones…) where no problem at all and soon she also took huge parts of our 30.000 sq feet garden under her wings, inclusive landscaping when needed.
When we decided to construct a roof over our 3 containers she also helped there, quickly learning how to handle woodworking machines, walking over beams and frames and climbing up and down ladders. Handling wooden beams, metal roofing sheets and fasteners as if it was her daily live.
Of course she didn’t think twice when it needed to be painted.

She took a great interest in our aquaponics system and was a valued help there.

She always treated the dogs, our clients, our properties and us with love and respect.
We consider ourselves very blessed to have spent the 7 (Covid19-)months with Ulli. Months which not always were easy due to all kind of health measures by our Government.

Sometimes the bond with a stranger, a volunteer, becomes so special, this stranger becomes family. That’s our Ulli……!

Needless to say that if she’s on this side of the world again she has a place to crash, rest and be for as long as she wants.

I had such a great time with you guy's, i learned so much, not only about the dogs themselves, but also about myself. i can't thank you enough for that!

I learned a lot and more from joop about caring for, raising and training dogs. He also has an incredible knowledge of plant cultivation and is generally incredibly gifted with his craft. Joop has always been patient, a lot , and he is always willing to share his knowledge with others. When I had his trust, Joop gave me a lot of freedom to organize my work in the resort. He had even given me the opportunity to personally take care of a very ( very ) shy puppy (Emma) to socialize and to train her, in order to prepare Emma for a possible adoption - that was such a great challenge for me, i learned a lot ( And the best is, Emma has a new, great home now ! so happy ! ♥ )

Liz has always cooked great vegan dishes for us, even if I'm not vegan, it always tasted very delicious 😋
Liz does everything to make you feel comfortable and at home. From her you learn everything you need to know about the adoption of dogs, as well as about the transport of dogs to other countries and everything medical.
if you want, she shows you all the important and interesting places on the island, and she is always ready to introduce you to her closest friends, so that you really feel welcome on the island.

What Joop and Liz do for these dogs and for animal welfare in general is incredible. Both have their hearts in the right place, animals mean everything to them and are no less valuable than humans.

Be open to new things, be ready to do a little more than is required of you, have a big heart for animals and always be honest and open - then you will experience the best time in this resort and on the entire island. Liz and Joop are always ready to compromise, they are open to every concern and help wherever they can, only one should not take advantage of this trust, there is always a give and take, just like in a real family :))

I had to ask her to take breaks , she would jump from one shore to the next without resting.
