  • Description

    Hello *

and welcome to my workaway profile - a tool to meet people that also feel energy by the idea of; inviting people to explore the wild beauty of a place, to embrace the challenges and the gifts this place brings.

My name is Sol, 31 yo, and I'm a teacher coming from Belgium, more specific Brussels.
I feel a lot for the idea that we are all teachers and learners, participators and facilitators and that we can find a teacher in all (living) things.
I love moving together with children and adults during their journey of working with hands, learning from the heart and thinking with the mind.. Embraced in a group and a natural environment.

For me a "classroom" is like Panta Rhei, everything flows, everything moves; people, plants, objects and even stories and ideas are constantly transforming. Sometimes in the same direction and sometimes in different ways. With time and space, it's beautiful inviting “children” to slow down, observe and feel. Through this guidance I value rhythm, beauty and order as essential to a nourishing environment. Growing as a teacher drives me also every day to observe and reflect on how to guide children during transformative moments of interaction between other children, adults, objects and the environment.

During the last ten years, I worked most of the time as a main teacher of the primary school and kindergarten in combination with freelance opportunities to develop workshops for children and adults about movement and the influence of a physical (outdoor) space, "the scenography of a classroom".
My freelance work is connected to Art Basics for Children.. a npo situated on the border of art and education; it is a laboratory for aesthetic experiences, creative development and artistic awareness.

The city was an inspiring place to discover different perspectives and listen to new voices. Brussels is a melting pot where I met a lot of children and parents with different social and economic backgrounds.
Working in regular city schools was for me connected to the idea of being a teacher in the neighborhood where I live at that time. I involved inspiration from Reggio Emilia, Freinet and Waldorf education. I always look for nature in the city. I use the permaculture principles as a framework to discover education where children can develop a sense of wonder and respect for the world around them fostering a lifelong connection to nature.

And now ... I will change my environment to live and work closer with nature. Observing what is moving, changing and transforming and see how we can interconnect things to build and craft a sustainable life to the self, Community and the natural world.

There is also something that sparks in me when I think and dream about .. working with wood - environmental justice - shepherd's life - fires to cook and manage (farm)land .. and withit invitations to other people to join and grow.

Let’s get a rhythm together, sharing a meal and enjoying a moment of play and rest :)

followed in 2023 a Social Permaculture Design Course in an urban context, particularly in Brussels, focusing on youth engagement and neighborhood improvement.

from may 2023-December 2024 I was one of the janitors of an Urban Permaculture Hub and Laboratory Korenbeek: a space for experimental learning in urban permaculture, in partnership with Back2SoilBasics and Toestand. There we invited schools and other neighbourhood orgnisations to our playfull laboratory! We learned all the basic assets of permaculture trough games in the garden.
