    Description

** new focus for 2026!** We are the same family living in the same place, but the work we are looking for is shifting this year from building/gardening oriented to child-care focused :)

Hello! I'm Polly, mum to two little kids (4.5yrs old boy and 6 months old baby girl) and I live in the middle of the pine forest 15 mins from the coast in the Landes region of France! My husband is from the area, but I am English, so we are a dual nationality household.

We have hosted workaways for over 15 years on our little farmy-type 'airial' for help with building stuff, permaculture gardening, woodwork etc but now we are specifically looking for someone this summer to help with the kids as I return to work!

We live rurally, but only a 15 min drive from the beach where there are usually some lovely summery little waves for playing in, and we have a river at our house for some cold-water dipping, lots of wild forest paths to explore, an organic vegetable garden, a community pub (closed in the summer though, but there will still be events taking place in the space, including a small festival) and a project that we are working on transforming a big old field into a community growing / building / making hub.

Living on the 'airial' (local word for a kind of inhabited clearing in the forest) are me, my husband, our two little children, and his two older children (in their 20s), plus usually a few friends or other volunteers staying with us. Our house is an open place and people come and go quite frequently, but we always appreciate the connections we make with people from all over the world!

We love to properly meet and get to know our workawayers, and try to welcome them into relaxed airial life as much as possible. We like to give everyone a bit of space too though, so we wouldn't expect to be sharing every single meal, it's nice for people to have their own rhythm of life alongside ours, and to share meaningful moments together when the time is right! There will be lots of opportunities to come along with us to the beach, to go on hikes through the forest, to eat delicious home-grown food and to go to the cultural events hosted through our pub!

We are looking for someone who loves children for a minimum of 2 months between May and September (but the longer the better!) to help with looking after our kids. I need to get back to work and our oldest will be on school holidays from July, and our youngest is still exclusively breastfed so won't be going to childcare until Jan 2027.

The actual work involved would be mostly playing haha - keeping our 4.5yr old entertained (sand pit, river dips, coming with us to the beach, colouring / drawing, gardening together, biking, building dens etc) and then maybe also taking our littlest for walks in the pram so she can nap, or entertaining her too as she gets a bit more independent. I wouldn't leave you with both children to look after at the same time, but it would be to help take the pressure off for a few hours at a time so I can do some work (I work remotely from my computer as a researcher). Max 3-4 hours a day, with at least 2 days completely off per week! Flexible arrangements of course, so if you wanted to travel to explore the nearby areas (e.g. Bayonne, Bordeaux) then you can take a few days here and there.

We speak both French and English with the kids so would be looking for someone who also speaks either French or English (or both!) as a native language.

You would have your own private double bedroom in a 'coloc' - a shared house with at least one other person (my partner's eldest son, who will be 26, working as a carpenter in the local area), with shared kitchen, sitting room, bathroom. There may be one other person in the third bedroom too, but this is not yet confirmed. If you come with your own camping car or tent then that is also wonderful, we have loads of nice little corners to set up camp and a warm outdoor shower, the shared kitchen in the coloc is also open access.

    What else ...

Driving licence or a passion for cycling is kind of essential as we live very remotely, so if you want to reach the beach or the towns, you need transport! We prefer non-smokers due to the risk of forest fire and also for health reasons around our kids. We are a veggie household but of course don't mind if other people eat meat, so all diets welcome! We would also ideally like someone who is able to commit to a longer stay (1 month minimum) so the kids can have time to get to know you.
