  • Description

    Hello,
my name is Simon. I am 24 years old and I am from a beautiful city in the middle of Germany, called Marburg. After finishing school I worked in a school for handicapped children as a volunteer for a year. During this time I discovered how much I enjoy working with people, especially children. I felt like we had a great time which was enriching on both sides.
After this great experience I further followed my interests and spent another half year volunteering on an organic farm with a little farm school near Osnabrück. At this time many people asked me if and at what time I planned on studying. But I could not imagine sitting in front of paper again. I really enjoyed making new experiences as well as working with my own two hands.
Therefore I started an apprenticeship as a carpenter with a company that, among other things, builds Tiny-Houses. I have been really lucky to find this place because I feel like I truly learned the craft of woodworking, while finding new friends in my colleagues. At the end of my time as an apprentice I was given the opportunity to express my love for classical mechanics and engineering. I decided to build a custom writing desk which can vary in height to enable standing as well as sitting in front of it. Switching between positions or adjusting the angle of the desktop is easily done due to the fun mechanisms I have developed. It took me quite some time to figure out, but I loved it. For my efforts I even received two honors.
Now I have been working for a year as a craftsman while enjoying increasing amounts of responsibility as well as educating new apprentices.
Of course working is not the only thing I do. I love spending time in nature. Whether cycling, hiking, sleeping or cooking in the woods, alone as well as with friends is really fulfilling for me. Respecting nature and sustainability means a lot to me. In fact I often worry about climate change and environmental pollution. Thus my heartfelt wish is to give my efforts and engagement to projects and places that bring people together in a healthy way, without taking future generations the basics to have a good life themselves.
While there is plenty of opportunity to fulfill those desires working with wood I am eager to learn so much more. Both in different materials and completely new skills and tasks. I would like to see more of this world and meet the people who live thereon. I want to face new challenges and contribute with what I have learned so far. After a long time being in a relatively fixed daily routine I was having a hard time rushing into the unknown, but I feel like something is calling me from afar – and I want to go out searching for it :)

  • More details about your skills

I have four years of experience working as a carpenter. Building tiny-houses requires skills in many different areas such as roofing, framing, insulating and custom, precise cabinet making. I am used to working with solid wood just as timber or beams and prefabricated material. I´m used to operating all common woodworking machines and hand tools. Further I have basic knowledge about metalworking and working with stone and glass.
Due to having worked a 38 hour week I am not workshy. I´m used to physical labour, although I prefer to avoid unhealthy labour such as heavy lifting with a smart organisation of the given task. One of my biggest strengths is finding new and often unconventional solutions for small or intricate problems that arise. I love “spaceship thinking” as I call it, to find the best solution with the given material, tools and possibilities. I have a mechanical mind that loves engineering tasks. But with the function there always comes an appearance of the things. And so it is that I´ve developed a sense for aesthetic principles and appealing design to all the things I create in order to fit the surrounding they are built in.
But besides physical material, I've also worked with children and adults with special needs but also regular children. I even had a time where I myself worked as a teacher at the farm school.
Although I only own the regular drivers license I am also capable, as well as having fun, operating heavy machinery like forklifts or tractors. Parking any trailer in reverse is a special skill of mine ;)
