Description
My name is Simon and with me life is a lot about polar opposites. I'm either energetic or lazy, sociable or reserved, well thought through or spontaneous. Of course there's a grey zone but for my upcoming trip to South America I'm going all in: I'll quit my job, give up my house and get rid of most of my belongings.
After being in Australia for a year in 2018 it opened up something in me. I found there's so many great people to meet, beautiful places to see and wonderful experiences to be had. This inspired me to leave my hometown to go live in Rotterdam for a few years. As I've now had the experience of living in this city for 5 years, it's time for me to move on.
That's why I joined Workaway and booked my ticket to Santiago, Chile for the 15th of September. Along the years I've heard from people that they think I would love South America, so I want to see if they are right! I also have a good friend in Chile whom I will visit first and I plan to end my trip on Bonaire to visit another good friend. In between I'm up for anything that allows to stay and experience life on this continent. I would like to travel for at least half a year.
The time living in Rotterdam has confirmed for me that I'm happier in rural areas, working with my hands and being physically active. Here I've morphed from a student to a fulltime working man, taking on some experience in green space maintenance (hedge trimming, working with a chainsaw, clearing weeds) and assissting in dredging work. After which I changed employers to become a delivery guy for white goods before getting promoted to my current/last job as a kitchen appliances installer.
I've never finished the study to beome a primary school teacher, but the interest to teach children is nonetheless alive in me. Especially in languages, which I'm really fascinated by. I love proverbs, etymology and comparing languages.
As a native Dutch speaker, I've picked up English quite early on daring me to say I'm native in English as well. Besides that I speak a few words of French and I'm learning Spanish at the moment.
So as for how I can be of assistance:
- Working with tools in and around the house - doing gardening work, basic repairs and/or painting.
- Physical work - As I've lifted washing machines for a living I am fit and able for most heavy duty work.
- Working with animals - I love animals and don't mind getting my hands dirty taking care of them.
- Teaching elementary level skills
Some more about me: I consider myself an adventurous type, loving to go out explore new places or going on a day long hike. I'm generally a cheerful, easygoing guy who likes improving his handstand, playing sports (basketball in particular), enhancing skills, or reading a (mostly non-fiction) book.
