Hi, we’re Raquel and Kacper!

We’re originally from Spain and Poland, but for the past few years, we’ve been living in Iceland. Now, we’re excited to take a break from our routine and travel, volunteer, and experience new places together. Workaway has been an incredible experience in the past, and we’re looking forward to doing it again—this time as a team!

Raquel has a background in digital marketing and a deep curiosity for the world around her. She loves dancing, yoga, hiking, and spending time outdoors. She speaks several languages and has done Workaway in the past, which was an incredible experience that allowed her to connect with people, learn new skills, and see the world from a different perspective. In Iceland, she has also been involved in community projects, such as organizing a multicultural festival and participating in sustainability initiatives.

Kacper has been working as an electrician for 15 years and also has experience in construction. He enjoys practical work, fixing things, and tackling hands-on projects. He’s hardworking and reliable but also easygoing and always up for learning something new. In his free time, he plays volleyball and loves cooking. He also enjoys working with his hands, whether that’s building something new or repairing things to give them a second life.

As a couple, we enjoy working together, whether it’s taking on a challenge, learning new skills, or helping out in any way we can. We’re both adaptable, hands-on, and open to new experiences. We love nature, discovering different cultures, and sharing good conversations along the way. Looking forward to meeting new people and seeing where this journey takes us!

Kacper is an experienced electrician with a strong background in construction and hands-on work. He’s reliable, resourceful, and great at problem-solving and decision-making. He enjoys building and repairing things, working with tools, and tackling practical projects. He also has experience in gardening and doesn’t mind physical work.

Raquel has a background in marketing and communications, with experience managing blogs, social media, and websites. She’s highly organized and structured but also creative and always open to thinking outside the box. She speaks several languages and has worked in hospitality, housekeeping, gardening, and language exchange, so she’s happy to help in different areas.

Together, we’re a hardworking and versatile team. We’re eager to take on new challenges, learn new skills, and get our hands dirty when needed. Whether working individually or as part of a team, we always give our best and adapt quickly to different tasks. We love pushing ourselves outside our comfort zones and making the most of every experience!

I spent one month at the hostel and it was truly magical. The location, the people, the atmosphere, the work conditions... Everything was just perfect and it was very sad to leave.

The hostel is a cozy wooden house which is less than 5 minutes walking from the entrance of the national park. From the hostel you have incredible views of the Tatra… read more mountains and, trust me, it's amazing to wake up and see these beautiful landscapes. Although it is a bit apart from the city center it is very easy to reach it, either walking or by bus. There are LOTS of hiking possibilities, mountains, peaks, lakes, valleys... for every taste and level, so you never get bored. Also, there are always people willing to share plans and routes with you, which is more fun!

Volunteers live in another building next to the hostel and which is also equipped with everything you need. You share the bedroom with another colleague but you also have a lot of privacy. Besides, there is a terrace where you can just sit down and enjoy the wonderful views.

Marzena, our host, is a generous and kind person, really easy to talk to and always available when you need it. I remember my first day at work... a lot of strange things happened, I had to call her hundred times and still she didn't let me down, haha. She always has into consideration the volunteers' needs or preferences and is very flexible regarding work schedules. Plus, our fridge was always full with delicious food. Thank you for everything, Marzena!

Regarding the tasks, we worked 25 hours per week, usually split in two or three days, so we had plenty of free time. Each volunteer had one whole shift (that is, one full day of work) and then the other day half shift usually shared with another volunteer. The tasks were mainly check ins, check outs, cleaning, setting up the breakfast, helping guests and giving recommendations, and taking care of the hostel in general. During this time I had the chance to meet awesome people and it was so rewarding to see that they really enjoyed their stay with us!

Last but not least, I really want to give a huge thanks to the amazing team of "weirdos": Xenia, Jonathan, Karolina, Karl, Leah, Laura, Eli, Sylwia and Bartek. Thank you for the great memories and for sharing hikes and trips, laughs, deep conversations, tasty meals, escapes from the goat and help during the crazy shifts :-P

I volunteered at the hostel for one month during the spring season. This was my second Workaway and the experience was very positive.

The work was easy to do, clear and well-organized and the tasks varied depending on your shift. In general, they consisted in doing check ins and check outs, cash counts, cleaning/tidying and socializing and… read more helping guests when needed. The amount of work depended on how many guests you had at the time. Some days were very busy and other ones quite relaxed. During my stay I also had the chance to meet amazing people from all around the world. Guests were very kind and outgoing and I learnt a lot about other people and cultures.

As explained in the profile, you're expected to work 24 hours/week. During my first two weeks we had 3 shifts (morning, afternoon and evening) where each volunteer worked 4 hours for 6 days and had 1 day off. The last weeks we had 2 shifts (morning+afternoon and evening) where each one worked 8 hours for 3 days and had 4 days off. In my opinion, the work is very flexible and in both cases you can have a lot of time to see the city, travel around, etc.

The hostel is close to all the interesting places. Everything is within a walking distance, and Tallinn's Old Town is just beautiful! Volunteers have their own bedroom in the same hostel and it consists in 4 bunk beds in an underground room. Due to that, the light isn't very good but I must say it was an experience to sleep in "the dungeon"! Regarding the bathroom and kitchen we used the same ones as guests and they both were well-equipped with all the facilities.

Meals are not included (only some breakfast like coffee and tea) but there is a supermarket just 5 minutes walking from the hostel. Because of being part of the staff I got discounts in partner pubs and hostels and I had plenty of time to discover the city and the surroundings.

About the team, I was very lucky to work with such wonderful people. They were all very kind and friendly and always willing to lend you a hand when needed. Hannah, the manager, is a really nice, generous and cheerful person. She explained to me how everything worked and always made sure that everyone and everything was okay. It was great to work with her and the other volunteers. We had so much fun together! Thank you Hannah, Anthony, John, Seiya and Connor, and I hope to see you again in the future!

I volunteered at the hostel for almost two weeks in May. Even if it was for a short period of time (it was a last-minute Workaway), it looked like I had been living here for months. I had an amazing time here and it was hard to leave and say goodbye to such wonderful people. I feel really grateful that I got the chance to volunteer here!

As… read more explained in the profile, the hostel is focused on sustainability and carries on many projects related to farming, local development and recycling. It is located in Zagarolo, a small village just 30 minutes by train from Rome. The train station is just 15 minutes walking or less than 5 with the free shuttle from the hostel. The town is calm, peaceful, and perfect to just walk around, enjoy the views of the mountains or have a nice "gelato" in a terrace. If it wasn't enough, in the hostel you have plenty of space for yourself to chill and relax, but also to have fun and spend a great time with the others. There's a huge garden, swimming pool, a big terrace... and even a bamboo garden!

The work is easy to do, clear and well-organized. When you arrive, you receive a training by the manager so you can have a better idea of how the business works, what they expect from volunteers, the conditions, the job, the projects and activities... Contrary to what appear in the profile, the working hours are 5 hours per day during 6 days and one day off. However, it is made in a way that you can have at least 48 free hours in a row, so it feels almost like two days off. There are four shifts per day (morning, afternoon, evening and night) and they are equally distributed among the volunteers.

The tasks depend on your shift but they mainly consist in supporting the staff with maintenance jobs such as keeping the common areas clean and tidy, taking care of the garden, helping with the events, preparing breakfast, reciclying, socializing and helping guests, etc. It is true that working hours can feel a bit long if there isn't much work to do, but you can always use your imagination to take initiative and propose things to improve! Personally, I think it would have been great to share shifts with other volunteers instead of working alone, like we did in the Pizza Party (which, by the way, was super fun!).

Regarding the accommodation, volunteers live in a little house in the same enclosure of the hostel. There are shared bedrooms, each one with bunk beds for two people. I must say that during my stay there it was cold and rainy and the apartment could feel a bit humid. Also, the shower is in a different building. All meals are provided and you can cook your own food in the guests and volunteers kitchen. We usually cooked and ate together with the other volunteers.

However, what made my stay in the hostel so special was the people I met. I felt welcomed from the first day I arrived and I had the chance to work and share unforgettable moments with wonderful people from Italy and all around the world. Everyone was so friendly, trustful, warm and kind, and always willing to lend you a hand when needed. I also felt that there was a very positive connection between staff, guests and volunteers and we treated each others as equals. I will never forget the yoga, the raining meditation, Eurovision (thanks for letting us watch it in the big screen, even if the connection was crazy sometimes), the pizza parties, the handwashing, the trips to Rome... it's a huge list of nice memories!

Finally, I want to end my review saying a big thanks to the members of the staff (Agnese, Filipe, Michela, Rossella, Rosalie, Veronica, Faty, Matteo) and, of course, to the amazing team of volunteers (Jocelyn, Julián, Camille, Noah, Max, Alice and Malin). Thanks all for making my stay unforgettable, I miss you and hope to see you again soon!

I spent almost two months at Sofia's place during the winter months and it was such an unforgettable experience. This was my first Workaway and it definitely exceeded my expectations.

Sofia is a generous, kind and strong woman and she made me feel like home since the day I arrived. She cares a lot about the wellbeing of the volunteers and is… read more always there for them when they need her. She's very understanding and has much experience with helpers, which makes very easy to talk and work with her. We also shared many stories and learnt a lot about Finnish culture. During this time I also met Mika (Sofia's husband), Camo (her adorable and energetic dog), Tarja and Piia (her personal assistants) and, of course, the amazing team of volunteers. :)

Sofia's place is divided in three: her house (where we also worked and ate), the second-hand shop and the volunteers' apartment. It has everything you might need (kitchen, laundry, and even extra clothes in case you are too cold) and a good heating to survive the cold winter. You can have a lot of privacy and space there. All meals are included but there is a supermarket just opposite the house in case you need to buy something else.

The tasks consist in helping Sofia with her second-hand shop (both the online and the physical one). The tasks involve mainly cleaning, repairing, labeling, sorting, ironing but also taking pictures, updating the online pages and organizing the flea market. That is, getting everything ready to be sold. There is always something to do! In addition, Sofia distributes the tasks according to your skills and preferences. I must recognize that, at first, I felt a bit clumsy and slow but it was encouraging to see how you get better with time. The work is flexible and there are shifts regarding the starting hours and the days off. You can also work more hours in exchange of more free time. There are shifts for cooking and cleaning and tidying the house as well.

About Savitaipale, it is a cozy little town in the region of the lakes, surrounded by forests and fresh air. The lake Kuolimo is less than 5 minutes walking and there are many hiking routes. There is also a church, a library, supermarkets, a bar... and a tower where you can enjoy the spectacular views of the lake. If you come from a big city like me, it is simply amazing and unique to enjoy the calm and peace of this place. Even if it is a small village, there is a good bus connection with cities nearby like Mikkeli, Lappeenranta or Jyväskylä so you can travel around from there.

During this two months we did many things such as going to an authentic Finnish sauna, swimming on the frozen lake, eating traditional food, trying the ice-fishing or simply enjoying the snow from the window of our living room. I also had the opportunity to go to Lapland and to Sofia and Mika's cottage in the middle of the nature. I had unforgettable memories of this experience and I look forward to come back in the future!

Last but not least, I want to give a special thanks to Ahmed, Ivan, Karolina, Pablo, Paolo, Stefania and Vincent. We all came from different countries and had very different personalities but we had a great time together and we ended up being like a family. It wouldn't have been the same without you! :)
