Hi!
I'm Jakob, 25, and I'm currently on a longer journey to re-orient myself after some developments forced me to change my plan.
I hope to be able to try out a lot of different work, especially physical outside labour allowing me to be on my feet moving around as a contrast to sitting inside behind a desk studying all day.

My main passions are playing music (violin and piano), running, thinking, learning languages and drawing, all of which I intend to do a lot in the upcoming months. I also truly love talking to and connecting with people but sometimes I do prefer to be on my own as well, I'm home in both worlds.

Learning languages opened the way for me to being able to talk to strangers so I'm quite passionate about them and constantly try to learn. Teaching is another skillset though and while I've had interest in it for a while now I have yet to try it.

I've only played music professionally so far.

Via Workaway I've cared for animals (cats, dogs, chickens), cleared gardens of overgrowth (brambles, grass) and did weeding, deep cleaned a house and did some smaller tasks like collecting firewood. I'm genuinely eager to expand my skillset and to learn. And I'd personally say I'm persistent and quick to pick up new skills.
I'm definitely thorough in what I do, maybe sometimes too much at first but given some feedback I can make changes.

As a child I used to be around animals a lot, during my teenage years that changed. While working away I re-discovered my love for animals and I'd say I'm pretty good with them and they seem to like my company.

I can play the violin on an almost professional level, I'd be down to teach it. I'm currently travelling with a violin too which is fantastic. I could teach the piano too but I'd still consider myself an intermediate learner so I'd only feel comfortable teaching beginners.

I stayed with Sorcha and Scott and their wonderful dog Púca for about 3 weeks and had an intense, but amazing and very memorable time. Both Sorcha and Scott are incredibly interesting, deep, knowledgeable and kind people. Sorcha has been a source of energy, it was usually her suggesting shared evening activities like movie nights or going to a … read more lake. Scott was like the calmer counterpart, soft spoken and with a passion for zombies, usually listening but he too has got a lot of interesting stories to tell! Both of them are exceedingly well read (and well watched), I left with a big list of books to read and shows to watch.
They're also fantastic teachers, it really shows they've got a background in English teaching. Their corrections to my mistakes were immediate, concise and gentle and didn't disrupt the conversation. I highly recommend their place to anyone looking to improve their English.
Both Sorcha and Scott are very hard workers which in turn motivated me to do my best each day. Sorcha spent most days in her study writing her PhD thesis and Scott, during my stay, was out working in the garden from morning till evening. Seeing that really impressed me.

For workawayers work is ... abundant. There's a never ending list of tasks so if you're looking for variety this place is like an all you can eat buffet. I cut brambles and cleared the garden of general overgrowth, collected firewood, weeded the yard, cut up cardboard, cut branches and twigs and tied them up into bundles, organised the woodshed and helped Scott with some tasks like mixing concrete. Scott and Sorcha were happy when things got finished and appreciative which I could taste in the excellent dinners they prepared. As a small tip I'd encourage future workawayers to ask for feedback and Sorcha and Scott to be honest and direct with critique early on to avoid miscommunication.

House and campervan are both really cozy and Sorcha&Scott's hospitality does the rest to make people feel welcome. However, the area is definitely quite remote. If you're looking for mainly cultural exchange it might take a bit more effort. Their suggestions of nearby towns to visit during weekends have all been amazing though, with lots of pubs and people to talk to and Scott usually kindly gave me a lift.

Overall my time here has been incredibly enriching, I'm taking away a lot, both in terms of knowledge/experience and fruits for thought. I could tell Sorcha and Scott went to great lengths to make me feel at home which I truly did!
To anyone looking to:
- be away from towns for a while
- learn about Irish culture
- improve their English
- wind down and pick up a good book (or three)
- do a big variety of work
- have time for art, DIY or other passion projects
- talk and connect with two lovely people and their dog
I'd strongly recommend coming here.
I for one hope to be back :]

I can genuinely not think of a better way to have gotten started in Workaway.

Since the very first moment I felt incredibly welcomed and appreciated. Both Edel and Luke are super fun to talk to and be around, always up for a joke and very easy going. The house is quite secluded but with a beautiful view over the valley and nearby hills.

Work … read more wise I want to point out how well structured everything was. The tasks were clear and concise and felt easily doable in about 4-5h a day on average. Any questions coming up during work would be answered within 2h at most while I was house sitting alone. I was allowed to manage my time very freely allowing for flexible days in regards to changes in weather for example.

As work I cleaned the chicken coop and most of the house, de-weeded the plant beds, fed and cared for the animals (chickens and 3 friendly cats), and did the dishes & laundry. Everything felt fair and was appreciated after it was done.

Regarding free time the location is definitely very remote. Even if you're a fast walker Gortahork is still at least half an hour away so you won't be able to 'quickly drop by the shop'. Edel and Luke have been very considerate though and offered to bring groceries on their way back multiple times. The surrounding landscape is beautiful and there's a great little walking route right from the doorstep with gorgeous views of the nearby mountains.

Luke and Edel have given me recommendations on what to do during my time off and I found all of them to be excellent, from climbing Mount Errigal (Luke kindly dropped me off!) to going to local music sessions meeting the amazingly friendly and welcoming locals. If you like cultural exchange you'll love the pubs and open sessions anyone can come to and listen and even join in! The Irish (Gaelic) culture is very alive here so if you're curious about local history, music or the Gaelic language you'll have no trouble finding people sharing these passions (beware of heavy Irish accents though, some of the older folks are very difficult to understand, especially after a Guinness or two -.-). People are generally really happy to have a chat if they sense you're interested so even if you're not the type to approach others first you'll be integrated into the setting!

I stayed for 10 nights and just had to double check because I couldn't believe it's been that long. Things never turned stale, there was always something new to do and I feel like I could have spent way more time without getting bored. Loved the whole experience and I hope to come back in the future!
