Description
Maya:
I’m motivated by creativity and making connections with people. Within my art practice and work as a creative practitioner, I am driven by bringing people together and celebrating community. My art practice includes textiles, illustration, and printmaking, focusing on documenting human interactions. I also have a background in scenic decorating and mural painting.
I have worked within the community arts sector for several years and I’m passionate about developing projects that feel representative and promote collaboration and inclusion.
I am also really inspired by nature and its impact on wellbeing. I love being outdoors — regularly exploring the Peaks and surrounding countryside in the UK. I enjoy foraging, camping, and taking myself in landscapes that help my creativity. I also love to cycle, run, and explore new places- this brings me lots of happiness and inspiration!
Jamie:
I’m fascinated by the natural world and love learning about ecology and biodiversity. I volunteer with local environmental groups that work to improve wildlife habitats, which has allowed me to build knowledge of local ecosystems and gain hands-on conservation experience — something I’m keen to continue developing through Workaway.
My interest in sustainability also extends to my work at a wholefood, worker-owned co-operative that offers organic, locally sourced fruit and vegetables, and fair-trade products. This role aligns strongly with my values and passion for food whilst building hands on skills in a variety of practical tasks — from lifting and packing to cleaning and general upkeep.
Alongside my love for nature, I’m inspired by creativity, particularly in music and audio. I have spent the last four years working as a freelance audio producer, recording and producing podcast series, radio programs and oral history pieces. I also facilitate workshops that introduce people to sound production, helping them explore their creativity and develop new technical skills.
I’m a keen home cook who enjoys preparing wholesome vegetarian meals, and I value working collaboratively, learning new skills, and contributing to projects — whether creative, environmental, or community-focused.

More details about your skills
Maya:
I have a variety of creative and practical skills which include: cooking, gardening and some basic construction skills (use of drills/saws etc.). I have picked the construction skills up through my work as a scenic decorator which involves creating special effects, colour mixing and art direction.
From the creative side, I have a background/skills in textiles, illustration and design. I know how to use a variety of design software including the Adobe Suite and work freelance as a social media content creator. I also have some audio production skills, having previously worked in radio.
I love to paint on a big scale, having been commissioned to paint a variety of murals on both exterior and interior walls. I am also passionate about traditional printmaking techniques and love to learn about techniques and meaning within different arts and culture.
I have worked for different arts organisations and arts charities in a project manager role so would say I am organised person with good problem solving skills!
Alongside this, I have also worked as creative facilitator, teaching different community groups arts-based skills. I have worked with Early Years groups (under 5 years old) all the way through to older adults aged 50+. I loved to teach and learn from other people!
Jamie:
I bring a mix of creative, practical, and interpersonal skills. My background is in audio and music production, and for the past four years I’ve worked as a freelancer in the radio and podcasting industry. I’m experienced with recording equipment, editing software, and creating music, soundscapes, and sound design. I also play guitar and am learning the flute.
As part of my freelance work, I facilitate workshops teaching people of all ages audio and music production skills. Through these projects, I’ve developed strong communication and teamwork abilities, and I enjoy helping others feel comfortable and creative.
Working at Wholefoods Co-operative Groceries has strengthened my ability to work as part of a diverse team and to carry out physical, hands-on tasks. I’ve learned a lot about growing processes, seasonal produce, and different fruits and vegetables — knowledge I love applying when cooking for friends and family.
I’ve also gained practical experience through volunteering with local ecology groups, helping to improve biodiversity and wildlife habitats. This has included cutting back vegetation, identifying plant species, and learning practical conservation skills.
