Hello :)
I’m an 18-year-old girl from Germany and currently doing a work and holiday year in Canada. For the past three months I’ve been working and living in a hostel in Vancouver, which has been a great experience to meet people from all over the world and get comfortable with life here.

In June I’m planning to head to Calgary, where I hope to buy a car and start a road trip back towards Vancouver with lots of stops along the way. I’m really looking forward to experiencing the journey slowly and discovering places along the way rather than rushing.

I joined Workaway because I like the idea of travelling in a more meaningful and connected way — not just passing through, but actually being part of a place, helping out, learning new skills, and meeting locals and other travellers.

Before coming to Canada, I had already travelled on my own in several countries, staying with host families and also working in hostels to support my travels. These experiences taught me how to adapt quickly, take responsibility, and feel comfortable in very different environments.

My time working in a hostel in Vancouver also gave me practical experience in hospitality, teamwork, and dealing with guests from all over the world. I’m used to working in busy environments, staying organized, and helping wherever I’m needed.

Growing up on a farm with horses also gave me hands-on experience with animals, daily farm routines, and responsibility from a young age.

Jackie reached out to me when I was looking for a last-minute shorttem Workaway, which is why I only stayed for 2,5 weeks. Jackie is such a fun and entertaining person to be around. She always has a story to tell, whether it’s about her own life, the history of the area, or the places she’s taking you. And trust me, she’ll take you everywhere (unless you’d rather stay home, which I honestly wouldn’t recommend). That’s when the funniest and most unexpected adventures happen, you never really know where the day will end (one day we ended up searching for a missing emu lol).

Going along to her shows, events, and even just her everyday life is an amazing way to experience the local culture and get to know the people in the area. Jackie genuinely loves sharing her knowledge and making sure you get to experience as much as possible. Her husband is just as welcoming, and together they created a really friendly and relaxed atmosphere that made me feel at home.

The animal work might seem a little overwhelming at first if you’ve never done anything like it before, but there’s really nothing to worry about. You learn everything very quickly, and everyone is incredibly patient, relaxed, and happy to help. During my stay, we also worked on lots of different projects like building a frame, putting up panels, and moving animals. I learned new skills, and we still managed to have a lot of fun while doing it.

Even though we were busy, we also made time for adventures. We spent days at the nearby beach, had a fun day at town, went on a hike with the dogs and even went on a canoe trip through beautiful nature, and even had the incredible chance to see a moose up close, which was definitely one of the highlights of my whole canada experience.

One thing I especially appreciated was how much Jackie cared about making my experience memorable. On one of my first days, she asked me what I wanted to see while I was in Canada. I told her that seeing a bear was at the top of my list and she genuinely took that to heart. We went on several wildlife drives just hoping to spot one and I could tell she was just as excited about it as I was. That meant a lot to me.

Overall I had an amazing time and made so many great memories. If you’re looking for a Workaway where you’ll be around animals almost all the day, learn new skills, experience the local culture, and have plenty of laughs along the way, I can definitely recommend staying with Jackie.
