Hi, i'm Louie.

I love travelling and exploring different ways of life. I was born and raised in the South of England before moving to the Midlands for university. I spent my first year surrounded by many amazing friends from both Spain and Italy, which really ignited the passion I have for learning languages and experiencing new cultures. For me, this feeling of being so welcomingly embraced into these cultures was incredible, and has left a mark on me which I will carry forever.

I believe I am empathetic, patient and open-minded. I'm always looking for opportunities where I can learn new skills and have interesting conversations. As a passionate home cook, it is a dream of mine to one day own a vegetable allotment. I would love any opportunity related to growing produce or helping to care for land and animals.

As mentioned briefly in my profile description. I am a really passionate cook. I love to cook dishes from all over the world and will regularly experiment with different cusines and ideas when cooking for my family. I have recently started to write food blogs as a way to share my thoughts on different dishes and how I would approach them. I like to write from a food science perspective as it is an area I find fascinating.

I have a Certificate of Higher Education within Chemical Engineering and am pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry in the following academic year. I now spend my time working a part-time job within a shop, and also tutor both Maths and Chemistry to younger students studying for their exams.

I run reguaraly and attend the gym. I am an active person and really believe in the importance of eating well and exercising.

Finally, a large passion of mine is within music. I have been playing the guitar for 14 years and it has been a huge part of my life. I have more recently spent the last year working on original music, but I love all kinds and learning different instruments.

I spent three weeks with John and Sarah at the Cortijo in May 2026. As it was my first time using Workaway, I really had no idea what to expect. However, I couldn't have asked for a more interesting and memorable experience. It was an extremely organised and rewarding 3 weeks.

The work was interesting and varied throughout each day, though not … read more necessarily from one day to the next. Over the course of a week, the working days could sometimes feel quite similar, as you'd often be doing the same task each morning (at least in my case). That said, there was still plenty of variety overall. The two other volunteers I was with would often be planting and weeding during the morning shift. I, however, don't have the fine motor skills required to plant tomatoes, and instead took an immediate liking to the grass strimmer. I spent a lot of time strimming around the Cortijo, and while it was repetitive at times, I genuinely didn't mind. We didn't spend all our time in the garden, though. During the second week we repaired and painted a swimming pool, trimmed grapevines, and tackled various other odd jobs. Overall, I found the work enjoyable. Personally, I wasn't the biggest fan of the more gardening focused tasks, such as planting, but I think that's just me.

Even though we were working every day, it was only five hours out of the day. The Cortijo is a VERY sociable place. The other volunteers and I spent so much time around the table outside with John and Sarah, or sitting in the kitchen with the cats and a coffee. As mentioned on the profile, you really do need to be sociable here. I'd actually say this is understated on the profile, because the social side of the experience is what truly makes it special. At least for me, the work became almost an afterthought. The conversations and time spent together are what make it memorable.

It would be impossible to write a review without mentioning Sarah's cooking. Seriously delicious, hearty lunches, usually followed by an amazing soup for dinner. There wasn't a single meal she made that I didn't enjoy. Even the homemade muesli we had for breakfast was to die for. Genuinely 11/10 I couldn't fault it.

At the weekends, we'd often be taken out to explore towns around the area, and Sundays were usually hiking days. I honestly think some of the highlights of the stay came from the two hikes we did. Getting to practise Spanish with everyone was brilliant, and it was a great opportunity to meet new people while taking in some incredible views of the Sierra Nevada. We'd always finish the hike by stopping at a bar for tapas and a beer, which was always great.

Reading through the other reviews, I don't really see this mentioned, so perhaps I'm just lazier than the average Workawayer. But as the weeks went on, I truthfully found it exhausting at times. There was plenty of time to relax during the stay, but some days I was just so so tired. There were moments when even the strimmer champ couldn't bear the thought of heading back out into the sun and firing up the FSA 135. Looking back now, I remember it very positively, but in the moment, when you're still tired from Sunday's hike and walking down to start another day's work at the bottom of the garden, it was difficult at times. Then again, maybe I'm just lazy.

I also want to say a huge thank you to the other volunteers I was with. We were living together in a little apartment beside the main house, so naturally we spent even more time together. At the end of each day we'd head back to our room and just relax. I'm incredibly grateful to Arianna and Navi for making this experience what it was.

And finally, to Sheppy the dog, and Brian, Dylan, and Zebby you guys are the best. You'll never meet a more loving dog than Shep, or better cats than those three.

Of course, the biggest thank you goes to John and Sarah for hosting me. I really won't ever forget it.
