Description
G'day! I'm Jono, a Geotechnical Engineer who is currently on a 12 month career break with one goal... to not step foot in a corporate office building for the remainder of 2026!
I'm a practical, hard-working, down-to-earth guy who values connection, kindness, honesty and having a good few laughs.
My passions include photography, Surfing/biking/skating/snowboarding, bread making (eating) and Colin McRae's Subaru Impreza.
I was born in Aberdeen, Scotland and moved to NZ when I was 9 so am a dual citizen. I have always loved Scottish culture and have just completed 3 months travel through Scotland, Wales and Ireland.
I am now slowly starting to make my way back to NZ and plan to travel some of Asia and hopefully get involved in some exciting workaways inbetween! -

More details about your skills
I have 7 years experience working as Geotechnical/Structural Engineer in New Zealand which has provided me with a wealth of technical knowledge in the construction industry and also enabled me to develop my 'soft-skills'. A lot of my work involved assisting home owners whose property had been damaged by landslides which required strong interpersonal skills, compassion and empathy, co-ordination skills and the ability to rationalise and solve problems decisively. I would balance my time between office work and being out on site working collaboratively within the teams on site.
I also have experience in gardening, working for my sister who owns her own gardening business in Dunedin, NZ . The role involved weeding, pruning, stump removal and mulching. Growing up we were always helping out around the house from chopping and stacking firewood, painting, mowing lawns, dog sitting, cooking and cleaning - a classic example of the kiwi DIY attitude.
I do a lot of my own cooking and am always keen to learn more (Ottolenghi is a favourite). The past couple of years I have begun baking my own sourdough bread which I absolutely love. I love cooking with people and sharing food and drink with others.
I am a hobbying photographer and love taking photos of architecture, cars, landscapes and candid shots at events. I have won a couple of amateur competitions and have sold a batch of A3 prints of one of my photographs. I'm always keen to shoot more.
I love tinkering with cars although admittedly there is a lot for me to learn still. I have a real passion for figuring out how things work and restoring them back to working order. I dream of one day having my own garage space kitted out with tools.
Unsure if this will land me a workaway but in my university years I was a semi-professional DJ playing at Uni events, private parties and some small venues. My dreams of being fully professional are long gone but the music never dies...haha -
