  • Description

Hi! My name is Josh and there are many different things that motivate me, but since graduating from college curiosity, connection, and passion for the natural world have been my strongest drivers. After years of studying natural sciences, sustainability, and social studies I have learned so much from many books, articles, and lectures, though that left me feeling quite isolated, but now I am seeking meaningful experiences that allow me to meet new people, learn from different cultures, and contribute in real, hands-on ways. I believe that traveling will give me many opportunities to step out of my comfort zone while connecting with others and learning all throughout.

I am happiest when I'm engaged and learning something new, whether that looks like fieldwork outside, helping with outreach, sharing stories with a new friend, or just being a helping hand where needed; I strive to be useful and to create strong communities wherever I am. Additionally, I thoroughly enjoy trying new cuisine and getting to learn how different food is prepared and the significance of certain dishes.

To summarize, I am motivated by a desire to connect with people, places and the planet, I am eager to continue learning from the landscape and new experiences. My drive comes from my curiosity and a hope to contribute meaningfully to wherever I am, no matter how big or small. Through Workaway, I'm certain that I will not only explore new environments but also grow through shared moments, cultural exchange, and collaboration.

More details about my language interests
I am interested in learning new languages as I meet new people, I think that learning a new language brings people from different backgrounds together. I grew up speaking both English and Spanish, though mostly English. As of right now I am learning Japanese and hope to continue learning while I visit in the coming months. I am open to learning all languages and hold none higher than the other.

  • More details about your skills

As a recent graduate with a B.S in environmental science and work relating to it, my expertises are largely connected to ecology, conservation, agriculture, and ecology.

During my time with the conservation corps, I learned how to maintain recreation trails and this required extensive work in the field and in remote areas to create trails using a variety of machine and hand tools. I have worked overnight in rough and rugged terrain, still delivering quality work alongside my crew. I learned to operate and maintenance brush-cutters, lawn mowers, chainsaws, and typical hand tools (loppers, hand-saw, trowel, picks, etc.). This job along with others have really taught me to be adaptable in changing situations as well as collaborate in high-stress environments.

My work with a local land trust provided me with a new set of skills that I hope to bring to the table, including outreach, education, plant identification, and conservation science approaches. I participated in many events to engage with the community on a local scale, creating activities for the youth to learn about native plants and animals as well as give them a space to be creative through different arts and crafts. I learned to use fieldmaps and fieldgear to collect data on invasive plants, diseases and pests, and coniferous trees.

Furthermore, I have experience working in a garden in college where I helped harvest and plant produce on a half-acre fully organic garden. There, I learned how to sustainably harvest, wash, and sell produce to the community. I also had the chance to work with compost, learning the different intricacies of creating the richest compost through both biotic and abiotic factors. I excel in outdoor and rural environments where I can get my hands dirty and learn from the land and community.

Lastly, I am a lifeguard and swim instructor, so working in or near water is no fear of mine and I feel entirely comfortable with it. Being a lifeguard for so long has helped me learn to respond quickly and swiftly to emergencies whether critical or not. I am red-cross water rescue, CPR, and First Aid certified.

  • What else ...

I like playing cards around a table with good friends as well as table games like monopoly and life. I enjoy time spent outside amongst trees, mountains, and the ocean. I love swimming in open water, snorkeling and getting to see the underwater world. I am a huge fan of hiking and camping whenever possible, and obviously just traveling in general. I love to cook (and eat!) all sorts of different foods, and I'll never leave a plate with food left on it. I also love dancing, especially when the music is good!
