Description
We are a small family with a 3.5 year old daughter and 7.5 year old Lab Cross. We recently purchased a large project house and property (21 acres). We’d love some help with general house care and improvements of the gardens. The property backs on to the mountainside, beautiful Rainbow Falls, and the McBride peak trail network (horses, humans and bikes use it). We are a 3 minute drive to McBride townsite. While it is not a busy town, there are regular events and things to do. The town is pushing for more tourism and they should! We are flanked on either side by the Canadian Rockies and the remote Cariboo Mountains. There is an active local Alpine Club (of which we are board members) with two backcountry cabins to hike to and several managed trails. We are one hour away from Mount Robson and the stunning Berg Lake trail. One hour away from Valemount’s extensive mountain bike trail network. And less than two hours from Jasper National Park. Your hosts are active mountain bikers, climbers, hikers and backpackers. We’re actually hiking guides and run a hiking company. There will likely be ample opportunity to join in on our guided hikes.

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
We have both travelled quite a bit and love to meet other travellers. We always enjoy learning different perspectives on things and of course practicing and learning other languages. We are both certified guides with the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (hiking, ski, and climbing). We’re also tour guides! We know a lot about the local area, and the National Parks. Mountain life is very special and we’d love to share how it works in this part of Canada. There is a lot to learn about Canadian flora, fauna, backcountry travel, navigation, basic survival, etc. We’re happy to have you come on guided hiking trips that make sense and have availability. While McBride is not a busy city with night clubs, there are social events and activities. Summer brings events like Pioneer Days, Canada Day, and the BC Drag-it Challenge. These are some great community building events where you’ll learn a lot about Canadians who live rurally.

Help
We’d love some help getting this property back into shape. It needs some extra hands for gardening, painting, daily household tasks, gathering firewood, trail clearing, etc. Some projects on the list: new garden fence, chicken coop, weeding, watering, painting, patching holes, etc. basically an extra hand that is willing to help and learn along the way (we’re learning too!). We have a 3.5 year old daughter, so if you’d like, some of the help could be hanging out with her. We will definitely be doing tasks with you, but may need you to do some on your own as we tend to some of the more boring details of our business. We believe in a healthy work/life balance so there’s lots of time for recreation. We have a wonderfully trained dog who loves to adventure with anyone who brings treats too. :D

Accommodation
Currently we have a room available in our house with a queen bed. We will provide nutritious and healthy food. We don’t follow any special diet, but strive to eat a balanced menu. If you require extensive foods outside of what we eat, please feel free to supplement with your favourites. Help with cooking and clean up is appreciated. As for alcohol, we do drink on occasion. Drinking in excess will not be tolerated (we have a 3 yr old!), and any alcohol you consume should be purchased by you.

What else ...
We can provide some transportation, but a bike would be useful (and fun if you want to enjoy local trails). We enjoy hiking, biking and skiing during down time. Campfires, forest walks and a trip to the waterfall can make a day complete. Our property is smoke free.
