Nice meeting you.

We are Hein and Anthony, originally from Namibia and South Africa, and now living in the United States. For now, we are working, earning, finding our feet, and carrying on with a few freelance and remote projects along the way.

We are not really looking for long term Workaway stays at the moment, but we stay part of the community because we still appreciate what Workaway is about. Building skills, finding a sense of home, meeting people who can become like family, learning from each other, sharing what we know, and sometimes simply lending a hand.

In the past, we have helped with hospitality, maintenance, gardening, animal care, farm work, photography, design, and a bit of whatever else needed doing.

We are considering moving to Salt Lake City or somewhere nearby in March 2027 if the right opportunity comes along. If anybody in the area knows of work opportunities, we would definitely be interested in hearing about them. We are both authorized to work in the US.

If we do make the move, we will probably start with the odd few hours, a day, or an occasional weekend Workaway once we are there. Nothing too formal, just a way to meet people, get involved locally, learn something new, and gradually find our place.

Herbal work, genealogy, art, plants, natural medicine, natural building, gardening, creative projects, photography, design, and anything a little different would all be of interest to us.

Starting again in a different country does not leave a lot of spare time, so for now we would be looking at smaller opportunities rather than longer stays. If you have ever wanted to learn Afrikaans, we can probably work something out there too.

Until then, we are happy to meet people, swap ideas, make a few new connections, and keep the Workaway spirit going.

Our hobbies include hiking, genealogy, cycling, swimming, exploring forgotten places, planting small micro-vineyards, and a touch of herbology. We sometimes take photographs for eGGSA, documenting old or lost cemeteries for genealogical research and historical preservation. This small contribution helps keep stories alive and allows families to reconnect with their past.

We love working with animals and find real satisfaction in helping others learn new skills while learning from them in return. Though we lean toward the conservative side, we value cultural exchange, kindness, and shared purpose.

We both have strong work ethics and different strengths that complement each other well. We enjoy working together on projects whenever the opportunity arises, as our professional skills differ completely yet align naturally when combined.

I very much enjoyed the time Anthony and Hein spent on the farm. They are multi-skilled and very adaptable, a real pleasure to have around. I wish them all the best with their future endeavors. Thanks guys!

Although it was not the first volunteering adventure, it was the first one on Work-Away. We stayed at the place from 2 March 2021 and departed 26 March 2021.

All in all it was a good experience with lots of learning opportunities. The highlight of the stay was being taken for walks in the mountains and to the river by the dogs; as well as meeting … read more the local people and the neighbours. They all had big hearts, plenty of questions and plenty of stories to tell. As a tourist you rarely get the opportunity to become part of the community, unlike an extended volunteering adventure. Visiting The Molen Pub and meeting the owners was awesome, and the food is highly recommended.

Duties included day to day permaculture and farming activities, labour, gardening, planting perennial grasses, clearing and raking cut grass, bagging and feeding grass that was raked to animals, de-weeding garden areas, digging holes, cleaning guest cottages after guests depart, assisting with general repairs to a goose pen, assisting in constructing a rock wall between a cottage and a cow path, cleaning chicken coups, building a fridge cupboard for one cottage, constructing the framework and flooring of a composting toilet, capturing, herding and relocating some farm animals and harvesting some edible mushrooms.

The afternoons and weekends was yours to do with as you wish, other than random small tasks and cleaning of cottages on a Saturday or Sunday when guests depart from the farm, which did not take too long. Other than that we cleared and washed dishes after meals.

Beneke is happy to assist when there are questions about general duties. Meals, which included breakfast, lunch and dinner, were always good, and was mostly cooked by Beneke himself. Who knew "Chicken in the Woods" really tastes like chicken, and home-made "Moss" would taste like champagne after fermenting for a while.

There was plenty of outings and a few braais at the neighbouring farms. Beneke was kind enough to arrange a braai and invite some of his neighbours when we wanted to invite some friends from Suurbraak over, and was also kind enough to offer a solution with internet connectivity so that we could study and do some remote work. He was fine with it when we moved some furniture around to construct a small office area with desk and table in the communal kitchen. The roadside picnic was a fun outing. Thank you.

Unfortunately, time did run out, and we did not get around to doing a lot of eGGSA related activities. Next time, maybe.
