Activities we are interested in:
Not travelling at the moment. May be interested in day-to-day opportunities around Cape Town over weekends if we have some time available, but we both need to be available norm business hours for now.
Our next destination:
Cape Town, South Africa - from Oct 2024 View allDescription
We're a bilingual couple, fluent in English and Afrikaans. We're self-sufficient and skilled in various life skills, including cooking and household care. We value practical skills over traditional gender roles. When traveling light, we prefer eliminating unnecessary items to organizing them.
Hein is currently starting a contract in Cape Town. If you know of reasonably priced flat rentals in the Milnerton and Montague Gardens areas for a few weeks, please drop us a note. The possibility is there that it may become a longterm residential stay.
We're not actively seeking WorkAway opportunities until late February 2025. Due to financial constraints, we're focusing on opportunities within South Africa and Namibia. International travel is on hold until we have build up some funds again for the purpose. We may consider short-term WorkAway opportunities in the Cape Town area over weekends, or day trips to assist in the surrounding areas if our schedules are open, or longer breaks during off-peak or holiday periods.
When we're able to travel long-term again, Anthony will need a stable internet connection and workspace for remote work. He's open to volunteering during off-peak hours. While finding accommodating hosts can be challenging, we've successfully stayed with a few who weren't listed on WorkAway. We're also open to long-term house-sitting, language exchange, and companionship opportunities. Long term stays will be preferable in our destinations.
Obtaining long-term visas for South Africans can be difficult in some countries, especially for same-sex couples. For standard stays, typically a written invitation from hosts will be required, and they will often know better than us how to go about applying for the correct documentation to volunteer with them. We typically need an invitation from a host organization involved in heritage, disability care, or cultural preservation for extended stays or in countries requiring a visa to enter the country.
Anthony:
I'm a versatile designer with a strong background in print, packaging, and digital design. I've held roles in IT, team leadership, prepress, graphic design, photography, and training within the FMCG industry. In recent years, I've transitioned to freelance work, exploring digital and AI art, and building online shops. I am on retainer as a remote worker, office hours does apply.
While I'm passionate about my work, I struggle with self-marketing. My remote work requires a stable internet connection and a small workspace, even if it is a chair somewhere in a corner with a small table, limiting my availability for standard volunteer hours. I'm flexible with my time and can volunteer during early mornings, evenings, weekends, and public holidays. I'm open to physical labor, such as farm work, gardening, and construction, especially under guidance, or working with animals, on ships and other types of skills.
I'm interested in medicinal plants, herbs, cooking, wine, and photography. I enjoy post-processing, color grading, and image manipulation. I'm always eager to learn new skills, and renovations, building and construction experience could be useful skills to acquire.
I have volunteered in various roles as a farmhand, maintenance assistant, assisted in constructing some odd structures, media liaison and assistant, co-managing a B&B and guesthouse, including creating a marketing portfolio and media library for a host or two, portrait and activities photography at the ocassional orphanage or wedding, B&B management, activity planning, and partnership building. I have some TEFL experience but am not certified.
Hein:
I'm a South African with a passion for travel, nature, and animals. I have a diverse background in various industries. I've worked abroad for a few years, at the Carnivals in the US erecting rides and operating rides and stalls, and as a merchandiser for Tesco in the UK for a few years, but had to return to SA to take care of family responsibilities in 2008.
Back in South Africa, I've been self-employed as a handyman, specializing in flooring, screeding, and carpentry. I've also managed maintenance at a creche and worked as a field technician in telecommunications. Additionally, I have experience in food preparation and delivery.
I'm certified in working at heights, rigging, and first aid. While I'm skilled in these areas, I prefer to avoid extreme heights due to the rigorous skills, physical strain and specialised equipment involved in operating at extreme heights.
I'm eager to learn new skills and take on new challenges. My previous work experience includes driving, handling hazardous materials, and preparing meals for retirees.Interests

Our hobbies include hiking, cycling, walking, exploring forgotten locations, swimming and some herbology. We occasionally taken photos for eGGSA in old forgotten, or lost cemeteries for genealogy indexing purposes when we come across them. eGGSA captures data from headstones and tombs from burial sites, indexing the information for genealogy research.
Love working with animals, but also find satisfaction in enabling people with transfer of skills, by assisting or helping them, acquiring new skills ourselves, and have the opportunity for some cultural exchange in the process. We have a strong work ethic, but each of us has his own strengths to suit a number of positions, entirely on the opposite spectrum of each other. We do enjoy working together on projects when the opportunity presents itself. Some more information
