Description

Hi! I'm Em (they/them) and I'm taking a career break from teaching secondary in London to learn more about gardening and permaculture, with a focus on conservation and sustainability. I'm currently in France, but I've had a busy year! I've been travelling in Indonesia, working helping out in gardens and permaculture in New South Wales, housekeeping and hospo in East Gippsland and Melbourne, and travelling around Thailand and Vietnam for 2 months. What I've loved the most so far is meeting new people and sharing stories and experiences. It's amazing what you can learn from having an open mind and connecting with strangers, and I love to find likeminded people who enjoy the outdoors and helping others.

I am multi-lingual, personable young professional with 7+ years of experience in teaching at a secondary school level and youth mentoring, I am currently taking a career break to explore Australia. With a background in customer service and an adaptable approach to tasks, I am seeking temporary employment in hospitality, retail and outdoor activities to support my travels.
My experience as an English teacher allowed me to work collaboratively with my department to design curriculum plans, as well as building positive and trust-based relationships with students as a Trusted Adult.
As Duke of Edinburgh Coordinator through my school, I am experienced in organising and coordinating expeditions and camping trips across the UK countryside, as well as leading training sessions, assessing participant progress, managing logistics, risk assessments and parent communication.
My background in customer service has given me excellent communication skills, strong organisation, and managing cash transactions.

I love the outdoors, camping and hiking to seeking out green spaces, and a rainy day is the perfect chance for a game of Catan or curling up with a book. I'm a big reader (currently obsessed with Eliza Clark and Mona Awad) and can never say no to a bit of kareoke (can't pretend to have any vocal skills but I will bring the energy!). I've got a soft spot for theatre, back in London I was in a musical theatre AmDram group. You'll usually find me with my watercolour set, and like to think I have a green thumb.

I … read more cannot thank them enough for allowing me to experience this little pocket of paradise, the care and dedication they have put into creating this retreat is astounding, and participating in the creation of such a meaningful project truly is a privilege.

The property is amazing, the communal space overlooks the sprawling rainforest skyline, and I was extremely cosy and warm in my little caravan, which is warm and dry.

The days are clearly and comfortably structured. During the day I worked with Bev in the garden on the grow tunnels, dependent on weather and levels of energy, and I got to meet the chickens and the fabulous English sheep, who live alongside us in delightful harmony. Other activities include feeding the fish in the creek, walks through luscious rainforest paths, and meal prepping and puzzles on rainy days.

We took our meals together on the verrandah, appreciating the peace and birdsong. We took turns to cook for one another, with clear and supportive communication and collaborating throughout. Tenzin and Bev are both great cooks, and it's very satisfying to use what has been growing in the garden in our meals! They were very attentive to my wellbeing, making sure I was comfortable and felt at home right from the start. The work is satisfying if you enjoy spending time in the garden, and Bev was always extremely encouraging with our daily tasks, making me feel like we were working as a team.

Mindfulness in work as well as during our seated meditation is front and center to life, taking into account energy levels, emotions and taking the time to just breathe and enjoy the environment. This approach to deeply rewarding and sometimes physical and tiring work is something I've never quite experienced before, and I think we would all benefit immensely from bringing mindfulness into all aspects of our lives in this way. Pure kindness, compassion, patience and generosity throughout.

Our evening meditations were a welcome blessing and one of the many highlights of my stay. Tenzin is a phenomenal instructor, and was very generous with sharing valuable insight into the meditative practice: as someone who knew very little about it but has a keen interest, I felt fully supported, and am grateful for the space that was given to my questions and reflections along the way.

All you need to bring is a love of the outdoors, a community mindset and open curiosity, and like me you will have an unforgettable experience. Thank you again!
