If you want to come and help Elle, you should be aware of a few things before.
We did not know any of that before coming even after asking a lot of questions. It felt a bit dishonest. So, the things she "forgot" to tell us :
- there is no real electricity in the house. A few celling lights in the main room work with solar energy and there is a … read more battery for the fridge, but there is no plugs and you can only charge USB-C devices by two ports.
- this means there is no WIFI. Cellphone data is spotty most of the time and disappears when the weather is really bad as it comes from Taveuni.
- water is also a limited resource, so cold showers and toilets are numbered and it will be expected of you to do everything outside if the water level becomes too low.
- if hygiene is important for you, you should know that the kitchen is open to anything meaning bugs, cats, coakroaches, etc and as the house is being renovated there is a lot of dust and chemical products (one of our fellow helpers had a bad allergic reaction). There are also a lot of wasps' nests inside the house.
- the closest city is 3 hours by bus, with a strict schedule (3 a day) that does not allow you to go there in the week, and the two villages nearby have no shop or cultural outings.
- adding to that previous point, there is almost nothing to do around the house. You can walk to the black sand beach (10 minutes), to a river (45 minutes) and supposedly to a waterfall (45 minutes) but that is when the weather is nice. And if you want to snorkel you should bring your own equipment.

We feel it is also important to note that Elle does not believe 5 days a week of work means access to food and accomodation on your days off. (Basically she expects us to go somewhere else during those days off). We know that some other hosts feel the same but they have clearly written it on their profile or told us about it beforehand as it is not the norm in our previous experiences. (And it's something quite important she should at least tells everyone beforehand.)

On a more personal note, we felt that Elle didn't want a cultural exchange so much. (Apart from the free work we didn't share much,) she even did not teach us anything about Fijian culture (only that she thinks everyone is a thief). She was often bad-mouthing about the previous helpers (it's a bit disappointing to be the first leaving a review knowing it didn't go well with at least half of the previous ones) and made us left in a day by being extremely rude.
She also told us that we were stupid because we didn't think like her on some subjects, and we feel that being open to other cultures should be the first step in welcoming Workawayers.

Altogether, the communication was bad. She did not have a clear idea of what she wanted us to do most days, and gave us inconsistent informations ("take a bath if you want" but then "water is too precious, don't wash your clothes"). She also became upset by things we didn't do while she didn't tell us they needed to be done, and we don't mean the basic stuff like cleaning the house (that was very dirty when we came, mostly the bathroom) but the cultural things she never explained like the water problem. #redacted# She also expected us to cook what she wanted instead of letting us cook what we wanted or cooking herself.

It was not our first workaway but it definitely made us more careful about where we will stay after that.

Apart from that, the view is amazing, the pets are lovely and if you are looking for a remote and tranquil place it could be a good one. Now that you are aware of everything we hope you'll not have any other bad surprises like us.

Elle, I hope this review helps you understand that you need to talk to people about your expectations and explain more things about your house (like the outside toilet) from the beginning if you want things to go smoothly. Talking about what is upseting you before you explode on people would also be a great improvment.
