  • Description

My name is Daniel de Koning. I was born in South Africa, raised in Swaziland/Eswatini, and hold both South African and Dutch passports - so I’m not entirely sure where I’m from, but I’ve always embraced that! I studied at Waterford Kamhlaba UWC (2017–2018), then again at Colorado College (2019-2023) where the global community broadened my perspective and inspired me to explore beyond borders. I’ve never strongly identified with one nationality-but over the passed 8 years through WWOOF, WorkAway, and World Packers, I’ve found a global community united by a shared love for the environment. It gives me a sense of belonging.

I am a cinematographer and film lighting electrician by trade, having cut my teeth on the small but mighty independant film scene in Colorado. Anna is a fantastic video editor and together we are a video making team. We would love to get in contact about producing documentaries and short/ long form video content for your project!

I’m a fun, hardworking person with a passion for greenery, animals, and project-based work that benefits the planet. I enjoy manual labor, keep a tidy space, love to cook, and I’m not shy to sing while I work. I am handy, can operate machinery and power tools and I am a capable and fast learner. I’m excited to keep growing, connect with others, and find my place in this big, green world.

Hi ! I'm Anna Sofia, a Chilena and American Environmental Scientist and emerging theatre actress. I'm a people-person, passionate about medicinal plants, permaculture, creating interactive visual art, dancing salsa, hip hop and contemporary styles. I'm excited to grow my acting, dancing, and permaculture skills with other fellow workawayers and hosts. Traveling through WWOOF and now WorkAway has really opened my eyes to the endless possibilities of alternative living - a lifestyle both Daniel and I aspire to have one day. I'm excited to join your project and learn from each other!

We both come from countries rich in nature and cultures that are deeply connected to the land. Although we were raised on different continents and in very different contexts, we share the experience of seeing how local communities can create meaningful change, from the personal level to the global. We are united by a passion for contributing to a more regenerative world, and we believe the WorkAway community has been, and will continue to be, a vital space for learning, sharing knowledge, and strengthening that movement.

Our experiences reflect our commitment to this way of life, spanning hands-on work across construction, technical systems, and land stewardship. In Cape Town, Daniel led a full apartment renovation, reworking the kitchen, living room, and bathroom into an open-plan layout, and in Paris, he spent eight months running Audio-Visual tech for an exhibition space, handling projection, video, and sound equipment and software. His soil-based experience is just as varied: leading community garden and recycling initiatives in Pretoria, teaching native tree propagation through South Africa's Indigenous Trees Programme, and spending five months WWOOFing across France, picking up French alongside winemaking, aromatherapy, and livestock management. Later, he and Anna WWOOFed across the US, from forest management in Colorado to wildfire mitigation and prescribed burns in Estes Park.

Anna studied Environmental Science in Colorado, focusing on the relationship between people and nature. She worked for a food justice nonprofit, leading educational workshops for teenagers to get their hands in the soil and learn to cook from food they grew & harvested. She also lived at a wolf sanctuary that functioned as an eco-village, where she designed a crop rotation plan, led educational tours, and learned welding, solar panel installation, and the safe use of construction tools. Later, she ventured into the world of marketing, communications, and event management through her work with The Nature Conservancy (an international conservation non-profit). She's a self taught photographer and video editor, most recently using these skills to create content for social media and learning the wonders and frustrations of TikTok, Instagram and YouTube.

We are a filmaking and short form video content creation team having filmed documentaries for small holdings, eco-villages, and the wolf sanctuary Anna used to work at as a means of bringing these places stories and people to the world. We are very interseted in exploring more subject and topics through our travels and would love to create something for our future hosts!

  • What else ...

We are avid board game players (Unfortunately Daniel is quite unbeatable) and would be super excited to play with our hosts (we have Code Names, Bang, Balderdash, Bananagrams but love Terraforming Mars, Catan, Wingspan, and your favourite one). We are also cooking enthusiasts - we will happily make a 3 course meals using the ingredients available and we get very creative in the kitchen, exploring ways to make nutricious and delicious food.

Anna LOVES dancing and doing theatre in her free time (Currently she is part of an improv theatre group), She also enjoys everything green - medicinal plants, herbal apothecary, pickling foods and turning rooms into jungles through an ever growing family of plants. Anna would love to continue learning dance, yoga, and somatic practices.

Daniel loves to build and create things with his hands, recently developing his passion for woodworking and legos. He is passionate about animals, birds, horses, dogs, and even cats having run a foster home with his family as a child, and loves the outdoors, hiking, biking exploring the natural setting are truely his happy place.
