My girlfriend and I plan to explore South America and would like to work on a vineyard to better explore our interest in viticulture and agriculture as we explore a career change in future years!

  • Description

My name is Claire and I am 26 years old and have been wanting to wanting to explore South America in depth for quite some time. I graduated college in 2021 with a degree in public health and decided to bike across the US East Coast and 10 countries in Western Europe before I settled down in Baltimore and worked for a tech startup (unrelated to public health). I quit that job after feeling discontent for quite some time, and proceeded to bike across the entire United States (East coast to West), and then all of New Zealand and part of Australia. I made a commitment to never work a traditional, computer based 9-5 again. I currently work as a bicycle tour guide for a variety of tourism companies, am a content creator, muralist, sales person and video editor. I have also studied abroad in Dharamsala, India and traveled to Canada, Colombia and Puerto Rico. I prefer hands on work where I can see and touch the fruits of my labor. I love talking to new people where, as I learn more about their lives, I can better understand cultures and history around the world. I find this line of work to be the most fulfilling, invigorating, and educational around.

Right now, I live in an urban city, but have been craving a connection to nature/self-sufficiency/agriculture. I have always been a very outdoorsy person, hence my extensive bike adventures and career within the biking world.

My partner and I want to work on a vineyard for two reasons. The first is that both me and my partner entered our early 20s working jobs that we did not like but felt obligated to keep. We have spent many years contemplating how we want to navigate the world in our careers, and for my partner, she wants to work in viticulture/winemaking. As someone who has traveled most often by bike, I want to travel at an even slower pace, where I learn about agriculture and a career closer to nature. Instead of traveling by bike where you only spend a few days in a place at a time, I now would prefer to stay in one place for a longer period of time to develop an intimate relationship and experience with that area. Additionally, I have been longing to experiment with working with the land as I contemplate moving outside of a city in future years. I will always want to be near a city, but I want to try out living a bit further removed from the city, and more connected to nature.

Essentially, my goal for this upcoming trip is to better understand the life that my partner and I want to create for ourselves when we next decide to make a big life change. I have been very happy living in a city for the last couple of years, but I can feel a deep need for change rising up within me, and I believe that change is something where I work more closely with the as compared to being surrounded by a concrete jungle of buildings.
