  • Description

I'm Carolijn, a student who is currently pursuing a masters degree in tropical biology at the university of Terengganu in Malaysia. I will spend my third semester at UNIFI, University of Florence and I am looking for a Workaway retreat where I can stay while studying. I'm very open for every opportunity!
    A little bit about myself:
People see me as an optimistic person and an endless dreamer with countless pursuits that I can barely keep up with myself. I love expressing myself through various art forms like painting and drawing, especially humans and portraits of interesting faces that I meet. I have been playing music since as long as I remember. I 'm learning to play the violin while simultaneously learning the guitar, a bit of piano and the harmonicea as well... To be honest, I fail in playing most of them but I just really enjoy playing it - which is personally for me the most important part! As a teenager I used to dance classical ballet on advanced level. I danced different genres all my life really, and I once dreamed of becoming a professional ballerina, but I've since set that dream aside for others. Nonetheless, I still relish a good dance session, whether alone in my room or with friends at the club. Now I also appreciate the tranquility of nature or curled up on my couch, absorbed in a good book. I have an obsession with good Japanese novels, like the ones from Huraki Murakami, or just a regular English classic, like Alice in Wonderland !
When I'm in the mood, I love to hang around at bars with friends, or just go for a walk in the park and bring some paper and pencils and a guitar along. I am by nature a rather introverted, soft person, but I quickly blossom when I surround myself with the right people in the right environment. I believe that Workaway can offer me opportunities to blossom even more along the way!

I started a degree in Biology at the University of Ghent in 2019. I chose Biology because of my passion for nature, plants, and animals. I follow a plant-based diet and I try to be an advocate for nature by just in general minimizing my cabon footprint and forcing myself to live a sustainable and ecological conscious life.
I grew up in a small town surrounded by horses, dogs, chickens, bunnies,... always eager to know how everything on this giant spinning earth works and interacts. Therefore I'm very grateful that I have the opportunity to study this matter!

I have travelled around doing various Workaway projects before. Last year I embarked on a journey through the Balkan, where I ended up working at a dog sanctuary somewhere remotely in Bulgaria for a month. I also have experience working abroad with WWOOF in Italy. I spend my summer of 2022 there, at a little farm near Verona, and it was a lovely experience alltogether. I thoroughly enjoy engaging in these sorts of activities and I would love to do more.

  • More details about your skills

I actively participated in a WWOOF project (Organic farming) in Italy last summer. This experience deepened my passion for ecological agriculture and sustainability, reaffirming my love for the outdoors and nature. That's mainly why I study Biologyl!:)
Back in Ghent, my part-time job at a vegan bakery involves baking and decorating cakes, cookies, bread and all the other vegan goods! I'm a beginner-barista as well, still figuring out the art of latte-art...
I can speak fluently English, coupled with a basic understanding of French and German.
Other skills I might offer are bartending, waitress, dancing-tutor, anything art-related,...
I love learning new things and easily adapt to different situations. People know me as a hard worker with a strong commitment to getting things done right. I'm up for trying anything new!!
