  • Description

I’m Birkan, 34 years old. I grew up in Hatay, Turkey — near the sea, with a fishing father and a farming mother. That early life gave me a love for nature, animals, and working with my hands.

    My education & early career:
I studied Electronics & Electrical Engineering, then worked in Turkey for about 5 years as an engineer. Later, I started a master’s degree and earned a spot to go to Spain for Erasmus — that was my first real leap into living abroad.

    Moving to Dominican Republic:
When COVID hit in 2020, I moved to the Dominican Republic and have been living in Cabarete ever since. At first, I worked as a marketing engineer, then joined a company called 3000elementos as an electrician. Eventually, I started working as a freelance electrician — and that’s where I deepened my knowledge of inverter & battery systems, and some solar.

    Why Workaway now:
For a while, I tried to buy a piece of land here and build something simple on it, but land is expensive. Before burning all my savings, I realized: what I really want is to live in nature, not in an apartment. I want to grow food, depend less on money, and be part of a community where people help each other. That’s why I joined Workaway. I want to try this lifestyle first — living simply, contributing with my skills, and learning from others.

    What I bring:
I’m very handy — electrical, basic plumbing, woodwork, fishing since age 8, farming background. I’m not lazy, but I don’t believe in overworking. Balance and respect matter most to me.

    A bit more:
I love nature, hiking, rivers, the sea, and good conversations about space, philosophy, science, or spirituality — without being stuck to one belief system. I love animals. I cook simple food (good butter, sea salt, not many ingredients).

Languages: Turkish (native), English (fluent), Spanish (well spoken)
Looking for: Stays of 1 month or longer, preferably in nature, with mosquito protection and some wifi if possible.
Available to start: in 10 days
