Description

My name is Ben, I’m 35yrs old, half Irish and half English. I have just finished volunteering in a Camphill in Scotland for the past 4 years to move to Portugal. Camphill is a biodynamic community that supports people with special needs, and strives to be self sufficient. My role in camphill was to run a workshop on the land Monday to Wednesday, and Thursday to Saturday I was in the house, cleaning and looking after the residences needs.

I studied Architecture and then got an apprenticeship to be a Building Surveyor. I then worked as a Project Manager on construction sites for 8 years. On the side I bought, renovated and sold property doing most of the renovations myself. I am self taught and not a professional builder, far from it, but it’s a passion of mine and I have been fortunate enough to get finically free from my side hustle.

While in Portugal I have worked on a farm in central Portugal for 6 weeks which teaches people permaculture. Something I’m very passionate to learn more about.

I am keen on protecting the environment and learning how to live with the land in harmony. I wish to buy land and set up my own community in the future, this is the dream in the Azores. I have always dreamed of being a chicken egg farmer and this is the project I wish to set up, I also am a very social person who loves people and becoming an Azores tour guide would be a dream too.

First I want to learn as much as possible and see how different communities operate and take in inspiration.

I have started a YouTube channel and have started documenting my travels in Portugal. I am doing a personal challenge of eating only local foods for 1 year in the Azores. I would buy my own food and be responsible for cooking it. And would be happy to share my meals with people if this is of interest.

Construction - a lot of YouTube and a few courses I have been on level 1 plumbing course, lodge cabin construction course, health and safety, I done gardening and will do physical jobs

I have a little sister who is 12 years old and I picked her up everyday from a young age so I’m great with kids! Also working with people with special needs I am very adaptable.

I will do all task no too small or too big I will put my all into it! And if I’m unsure I always ask how to do it, very interested in a farming and would love to learn more and more :)
