Description

I'm a 26 year old Dane, finishing my Masters' programme in Innovation this Spring. I have spent one (hundred) too many days on the school bench, which has left me a burning spark inside to connect with new cultures and people, gain practical knowledge and skills, and most importantly help where I can by doing something meaningful, one day at a time.

Earlier today I was just contemplating my current phase in life. For the past 6 years I have spent many hours researching what is going on in our world and why. Without jumping too far down into the rabbit hole, I'm not exactly pleased with the current system and state of affairs here in the big city. Therefore, I'm eager to learn about "alternative", more traditional ways of living, based on a deeper connection to nature, animals, spirit and between people in communities where people really want the best for each other. I finally feel ready to go from seeing the problem to doing something about it.

For me that start with getting out into real life and helping meaningful projects, where I might be able to contribute. What I currently lack in practical skills, I hope to make up for with my thoughtful, determined and playful spirit, always eager to learn new ways.

I look forward to seeing where my contribution can find use.

I'm very interested in learning Spanish. I have been taught entry-level spanish in school before and went on an exchange to Colombia where I learned a bit as well. However, I want to become fluent and I'm willing to take active steps towards that. Besides that I can communicate decently in German and English. I would probably be able to teach English to others, especially if it was to children, though I don't have any experience in doing so.

Fortunately and unfortunately I'm just now starting this new life chapter, so my current practical repertoire list is embarrassingly short. Current cluelessness should however not be mistaken for sky-high potential! I'm usually a fast learner and definitely not afraid to go out and get my hands dirty. I'm fascinated to learn about holistic ways of living, through a more simple but fulfilling life, interacting with the land and people in a positive way. I'm disciplined, resilient, able-bodied and love to be challenged both mentally and physically, so you won't have to go easy on me. Essentially I would just be very thankful for any opportunity to do something good, and learn new ways in which I can participate to building a better and lighter future for the coming generations. And I'm so ready to act on any chance presented to take some steps towards that.

What else ...

I'm quite sociable but at the same time very respectful of boundaries. Generally, I think I'm quite adaptable to most settings, and naturally sort of find my place where I can contribute without being an obstacle.

Also, I've always been good with animals and children (especially), as I'm very playful and caring.

And although these self-praising descriptions probably make me seem boring and dry, I do fancy some humor, which to be fair can be quite dry.

I spent 3,5 weeks highly constructive and plentiful weeks at Mario and Isaskun's inspirational mountain farm. Looking to learn about permaculture and diverse / small-scale farming I could not have asked for a better place to start learning about the principles and practical tasks needed to run a sustainable farm. Mario has dedicated much of his life to mastering these philosophies in practice and I was lucky enough to gain a glimpse into some of this work in action. Gaining insights into the library of materials (video and written) Mario has gathered over the year, I was served a broad range of diverse tasks mostly centered on various land maintenance and adaptive projects. Some of which appeared challenging at first but soon turned out to be equally rewarding, even meditative. Once I got the hang of things, the working hours flew by and became something to cherish not wait to pass by.

I was also fortunate to receive fantastic tips for afternoon and weekend trips across Cantabria. Whether you are looking to explore the stunning nature (mountains, rivers, caves, beaches) or fascinating cities (Bilbao, Santander) there is plenty of opportunities for experiencing this amazing part of northern Spain. I was offered a mountain bike to roam around, which made the vicinity highly accessible, but the area is also well connected by train/buses.

The family was highly hospitable and kind to me throughout my stay, and rarely did I feel in need of much else. Also Mario (and Isaskun) are great cooks. However, I wouldn't recommend going if you expect to serviced and entertained the entire time, as the family understandably leads a busy family life first and foremost are looking for people willing to contribute as there are lots of tasks waiting to be done. Also, if you do not enjoy spending time alone, I could imagine you might at times feel a little isolated.

That said, it is ideal for people with an adventurous spirit who enjoy a simple and peaceful lifestyle and don't mind channelling some energy into helping out a wonderful family create their dream farm. To those people I can highly recommend reaching out to Mario. I hope to stay in touch with Mario and I wish him and the girls all the best for the future!
