    Description

2019 is looking to be a very busy, promising year on our little farm. We would love to meet you and involve you in a variety of projects from building an outdoor kitchen, and a greenhouse as well as renovating our chicken house and getting the vegetable garden started.

Of course mowing season will start soon. Inside we have a variety of projects .. and Jovita is always happy when someone helps take over some of the cooking!! For outdoors we really need someone who is strong and willing to help Jovita with the building projects. Inside, we could really use your help ironing, cooking and cleaning.

We live on a sweet little farm just outside Ghent with our almost 5-year-old son, 3 miniature sheep, 2 goats, 2 cats and currently 12 chickens. Our family is trilingual and we regularly speak English, German and Nederlands (Flemish). We could really use some help maintaining and making improvements to the farm and are very excited to be adding a large vegetable garden this year. We prefer to use traditional and eco-friendly methods.

Jovita is from the US, just north of Seattle. Axel is German and British. We have lived in Belgium for nearly 10 years and love it here. We are quite integrated, speak Nederlands and actively involved in our community.

Axel cycles to the nearest station, takes the train and cycles again on the other end to his place of work which leaves us with the car 4 out of 5 weekdays. Finn goes to a Steiner / Waldorf school in the countryside also 4 out of 5 days. Jovita keeps busy running the household and trying to keep on top of the farm. We are also hoping to open a business soon so that will spread her even thinner. We are very active in a group of local and international familes and are currently creating a website to spread the word about our activities.

Jovita loves crafting .. just about anything. She knits, crochets, paints, sews, teaches patchwork and quilting. Cooking, baking, reading and gardening rank up there too.

Axel spent many years as a professional back-roads tour guide for small groups up to 11 passengers. He enjoys exploring new places and spending time with our son.

Finn just turned 5. He's a fun kid who loves a good laugh. It's almost hard for me to describe him right now because he has blossomed so much in the last year and become so independent - that said, he sometimes get's a little overwhelmed with too many visitors and begins craving time alone time with mama & papa. He absolutely loves riding his bike, runs everywhere he can and is stretching his climbing abilities every day. He enjoys reading books, buying, planting and picking flowers and working in the garden with us.

The help we need is very varied from gardening, cooking, ironing, cleaning, helping to organize, building and all-round maintenance. You will primarily be working with Jovita but also ask that you help Axel on Saturdays, this will mean that you will likely have Tuesday (or Wednesday) free during the week plus Sunday. We can also be flexible and make some compromises depending on the weather - obviously sunny days are better for working outside, but they make great days to go exploring too! On school days we really try to do get all our work done between 9am and 2pm so that I can devote my afternoons to Finn. We will arrange our projects on a case by case basis as we meet you and match your skills to things that need doing.

Send us the dates of your travel and let's book your stay with us!

A re-cap of our positive Workaway experience:
To date we have welcomed so many workaway helpers into our home that I have lost count and have enjoyed nearly every moment.
*️️️ L&G helped us with projects inside as well as outside including lots of ironing and weeding.
*️️️ M&M put up sturdy perimeter around our future vegetable garden.
*️️️ V plus Y&R painted our downstairs bathroom, mounted the gates (reclaimed doors) on our vegetable garden, and helped create a new walkway.
*️️️ R and J&J helped us hostess an Easter Egg Hunt & Brunch for 100 people, clear several patches of nettles, create another large flower bed as well as clear the vegetable garden area so we could begin planting. M helped create a flower bed and put in 100 plants to attract Bees & Butterflies to our garden.
*️️️ Another M worked independently to help rid of us our plague of nettles.
*️️️ T&A helped us get a really good start on the chicken run and more fencing / doors around the vegetable garden - A helped me immensely in the house and cooked for us too which is always a big bonus!
*️️️ H came at a time when I felt my home organization was completely failing and helped me in so many ways!!
*️️️ F&G painted our kitchen where I now happily spend my time. S helped me paint our cozy living room, just needs a few finishing touches.
*️️️ G&A plus S helped prepare and then host our annual Easter Egg Hunt for 120+ people without one single glitch. I couldn't be more grateful!!
*️️️ J&L helped all around .. with a laugh and a smile planted 12 fruit trees, kept the lawn mowed, weeded a huge overgrown section of our future vegetable garden and introduced me to Maté!!
*️️️A&J became a part of our family and were incredibly helpful keeping Finn entertained. the weather was awful and A got sick so we did a lot of odd jobs around the house during their stay.

We especially need help in the very large garden - mowing, cutting branches and bushes, building raised beds, weeding, watering and later harvesting - hopefully this year we will be able to can and make some jams & jellies. We also need to build a 'prettier' fence for our goats, paint the chicken house and build a greenhouse. Enthusiasm is more important than skills but gardening, building and woodworking experience is a plus.

We ask 25 hours of help per week including:
*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ looking after / playing with our son when we need to get jobs done
*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ preparing meals (either together or alone)
*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ light house cleaning (vacuuming & mopping floors, tidying the kitchen, etc)
    *️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ helping with the ironing
*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ feeding chickens and collecting eggs

    What else ...

We are just on the edge of Ghent .. you can easily cycle (we have a bike for you to use) into town or walk 10-15 minutes and jump on the tram. Ghent is a beautiful and lively city full of families and students .. there are plenty of museums, restaurants, clubs, bars, parks and bicycle routes to enjoy. From our farmhouse you cannot see any of our neighbours. It is very quiet and yet so close to the city.
