Ou place is a 5 acre mixed vegetable farm using beyond organic practices. We grow seasonal produce, pastured poultry, and eggs for 2 local farmers markets, a 40 person CSA, and local restaurants. I also work with three local schools and have beautiful and fun school gardens going. We work hard, but have a great time down here in Oak Hill. We are young and passionate about sustainable farming and living. This is a great place to learn about farming, canning, homesteading, cheese making and brewing. As we have only been in production since 2009, we are constantly building and growing on what we have. New ideas and projects are always considered. Right now we are working on a new solar system and we are excited to have a new dorm and a beautiful bell tent this year to offer for volunteers. The farm is moving into more permaculture projects (restoration agriculture) and we have lots of hugokultur beds all over and are always building more. This year we will be expanding into tree propagation, mushroom cultivation, sheet composting and more forest farming as well as lots of great other sustainable projects. This is a diverse small farm that is growing each year to adapt to our changing economy and climate.
Volunteers should be interested and willing to help 25 hours/week in exchange for a room in one of two trailers with an outdoor kitchen: propane stove and oven, solar power, composting toilet and heated outdoor shower. Camping is also available. Pets are negotiable, but no children please. Volunteers are accepted September 15th through June with a minimum two week stay. We also have partial (3 month) and full season (6 month) internships available. We are located 30 miles south of Daytona Beach, FL, in very close proximity to Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge, Canaveral National Seashore, miles of intracoastal waterway and gorgeous beaches. Transportation is available if needed.
Help with Eco project
We are very passionate about the ecology of our area. You will see lots of native wildlife (turkey, deer, hawks, egrets, sandhill cranes, turtles, and lots of lizards) and our farm is on 140 acres - 100 acres of which is wooded- so it provides an amazing habitat. We are also an intentional community and you can expect to live and work with 3-6 other volunteers while here.
You will be helping with gardening, planting, weeding, harvesting, we have workshops and events that we host that volunteers are involved in.
english and very limited spanish and german
The volunteer space is very well kept and clean. We have two trailers, a Bell tent, and camping. We have a big beautiful communal kitchen that is very well stocked. We have a farm library that has lots of great farming info as well as lots of novels to read and share. We also have a composting toilet and a heated outdoor shower.
We are 15 min from the beach and only a mile from the river. The Canaveral National Seashore is only minutes away and there is the Merrit Island Wildlife Preserve also nearby. Central Florida has lots of springs and canoeing opportunities and the Fall/Winter/Spring is the best time to enjoy the outside in Florida. Volunteers work until 2pm Mon thru Fri and have weekends off so there is plenty of time to explore.
