Workaway Opportunity at the farm: A Chemical-Free Regenerative Haven

Welcome! Nestled in the heart of Forest Grove, just 18 minutes south of Margaret River, our 57-acre property is a sanctuary for those passionate about sustainable living and regenerative farming practices.

We are a family of three—my wife , our teenage daughter, and myself—sharing this land with a variety of beloved animals, each with their own names and unique personalities. We value and cherish all our animals and eat none of them. Currently the farm is host to 3 horses, 4 Scottish Highland cows, 2 pigs, 4 mixed breed lambs, 8 Silky Bantam chickens, a rabbit called Benjamin, a dog called Bella and 5 Bee hives.

Farm is completely chemical-free, and we’re dedicated to nurturing the land while improving it for future generations. We are trying to do our little bit for our planet.

Our mission is rooted in regeneration: we plant trees, restore ecosystems, and work in harmony with nature to create a thriving, balanced environment. It is surrounded by picturesque farms, world-renowned vineyards, and some of the most breathtaking beaches you’ll ever see.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

The Forest Grove region in Western Australia holds deep cultural and spiritual significance for the Wadandi people, the traditional custodians of the land. The Wadandi, or “Saltwater People,” are part of the Noongar Nation, whose ancestral lands stretch across the southwestern corner of Australia. Their connection to the Forest Grove area extends back tens of thousands of years and is rooted in a profound understanding of and respect for the natural environment.

    Cultural Significance

    1. Sacred Sites and Stories:
The region is dotted with sacred sites that feature prominently in Wadandi Dreaming stories, which explain the creation and interconnectedness of the land, waterways, animals, and people. These stories guide traditional land stewardship practices and serve as a cultural and spiritual roadmap for living in harmony with nature.
    2. Land and Sea Connection:
Forest Grove’s proximity to both lush forests and the Indian Ocean reflects the Wadandi people’s identity as “Saltwater People.” This connection to diverse landscapes underscores their sustainable practices and cultural traditions, such as fishing, foraging, and ceremonial activities tied to specific seasons.
    3. Boranup Karri Forest:
Nearby, the Boranup Karri Forest holds special importance. Its towering karri trees are seen as symbols of strength and renewal, and the forest is an integral part of the Wadandi people’s spiritual connection to the land.

    Sustainability and Caring for Country

The Wadandi people’s philosophy of “Ngulla boodja,” meaning “our land,” emphasizes the importance of caring for the land not only for current inhabitants but also for future generations. Traditional practices such as controlled burning (cultural fire management) were used to enhance biodiversity and maintain balance in the ecosystem—a principle echoed in modern regenerative farming techniques in the region today.

    Recognition and Continuation

Visitors to Forest Grove can learn about the Wadandi people’s enduring connection to the region through cultural tours, heritage sites, and art installations. Efforts are ongoing to preserve and celebrate their rich heritage, ensuring that their wisdom and traditions continue to inform sustainable practices and deepen the appreciation for this extraordinary landscape.

In Forest Grove, the Wadandi people’s legacy is palpable, offering a profound reminder of the deep, unbroken connection between land, culture, and spirit.

At the farm we are conscious that the land has the ability to somehow tie people to it. The seasons, the natural beauty, the ocean, the native bush and its abundant wildlife….. once it’s got you in its grasp you will never want to leave. It becomes part of you.

Don’t believe me?…..Come and see for yourself.

Join us and be part of our journey to create a thriving, sustainable future. We can’t wait to share our little slice of paradise with you!

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

At the farm we offer a fully self contained, 2 bedroom cottage as accommodation. The cottage is best suited to couples.

The cottage looks out across farmland and our dam (which you can swim in). Our horses and 2 pigs live close by and native birds are constant visitors to the cottage garden.

The cottage has full cooking facilities. Work hours are 15hrs per week and people are responsible for buying and preparing their own meals. There are markets, shops and a multitude of other option's in Margaret River which is 18 min away by car.

In the summer months we start early, at 7.30am, to beat the heat. Finishing time is 11.30am. Afternoons can be spent swimming at the beach, exploring the region or just hanging out at the farm relaxing and reading a book.

If the surf is on we can always push start dates back to later in the day. We do love to surf!
