Description
We are Manuel (50) and Katrin (45), a couple from Germany. We spend summer and winter in Berlin and spring and autumn on the Greek island of Aegina, close to Athens. Over the last two years we have built a small home on Aegina near the village of Portes with two small houses made from sustainable wood. We try to organize the place in an environmentally friendly and practical way, with a water recycling system, separating toilets, and a natural garden that should need less maintenance in the future.
Although the houses are already built and habitable, there is still a lot to do, especially outside around the garden and the land, and sometimes we can also use an extra hand in the houses. The ideal stay would be around two weeks, sometime between September 28 and October 18. -

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
We are happy to spend time together, cook, chat, or sometimes go to a beach, bar, or restaurant. At the same time, nobody has to join every activity, and we also respect everybody’s need for privacy and time on their own. If we go out for some paid activity together, everybody normally pays their own costs unless we explicitly invite you.
There are beautiful hiking routes around the area, and both a beach and a traditional taverna are within walking distance. Our place is near the small village of Portes, which is rather remote. To explore the whole island independently, we recommend renting a scooter or quad, which is usually not very expensive.
If you stay with us, you can learn about approaches for a more sustainable building and living and about the experience of an island life in Greece. :-) -
Help
We mainly need help with practical outdoor tasks around the houses and garden: preparing and building simple paths, laying weed-control fabric, moving soil, stones, and gravel, helping with planting and irrigation, and also sanding, masking and painting wooden parts using a brush, roller, or painting sprayer.
The help is not complicated, but often physical, so you should be fit, reliable, and willing to get your hands dirty. We will usually do tasks together and explain what needs to be done. Sometimes there are also tasks that you can continue on your own after a clear explanation. Experience with gardening, renovation, or practical projects is a plus, but you do not need to be a professional.
We ask for 20–25 hours of help per week, with at least two full days off. The exact schedule depends on the weather and the tasks and will be agreed upon together, so some flexibility is important. -

Accommodation
You will sleep in our small wooden house, which is also used as Manuel’s studio and office. It has a comfortable sofa bed that is about 1.40 meters wide, a desk, a small washbasin, a urinal, and additionally a portable separating toilet. Couples are also welcome if the sofa bed is large enough for you and if you are both happy to do physical tasks.
The small house will be your private space during the evening and night. On about three days per week, Manuel needs to use it as an office during the daytime, usually during your working hours. During the other days, you can hang out there or even work on your own stuff. The internet connection is fast, and there is a great sea view.
In the main house, there is a shared kitchen, a bathroom with a shower, and another toilet. We would like to have some privacy in the main house between approximately 23:00h and 10h in the morning.
We will often cook and eat together, mostly vegetarian food. You can also use the kitchen to prepare your own meals. -
What else ...
There are many things to explore on Aegina. Main activities are hiking, going to beaches, tavernas, or bars. But there are also cultural activities and great archaeological sites to explore (Aegina was the first capital of Greece). Check the website of "weloveaegina" to discover activities.
