Description
Born and bred in Australia, my family is grown up and I've flown the coop instead and recently bought a property in Hungary to convert into a workshop venue with accommodation.
I worked online to try and supplement income, wrote a regular blog about living in Hungary, am an avid traveler and desire to set up my 1/2 acre property to become a great little adventure destination with 4 to 8 guest beds and a stand alone cottage that can take up to 4 guests.

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
As the project is growing, tasks vary yearly. In 2026, it will mainly involve completion of yard projects already underway.
Lake Tisza district is a paradise for over 200 bird species, bike riders and canoe enthusiasts.
Tisza area, Porosolo, is home to the largest fresh water aquarium in Europe, with boat rides and other activities...
All up, life in an almost sustenance living village of 900 people is a step back in time, something to remember for life.
There are 2 grocery stores, a doctor, a chemist, Post Office and "Council Chambers"/Polgamyster building.
Buses to town go past my doors daily.
Help
Do you have a few free months to experience a very different workaway adventure?
The main thing needed here in 2026 is to complete many small projects in the yard, that have been neglected over the past 5 years on my half acre/2,000 sq mtr property. I have tools, and materials needed, except someone who can raise a post or more, do handyman jobs outside, paint inside the dwellings and especially outside them all.
The Deal is This...
I supply your food and your seperate little double storey cottage, for the period of time with me...
You supply willing hands (complete with body and mind) for the time agreed to stay.
I will meet you at the local train station and take you back upon completion of agreed time... if necessary...
and will pay your return train fares from Budapest to my place if you complete a full month of help.
I would prefer someone who is used to handymam/woman jobs.
Someone with iniative to get up on their chosen work days and get on with things, without always depending on me to be with them every minute of every day.
I do like to work outside and am always ready to help with the work, as long as you take the lead on the jobs to complete, as I do work online.
Basic infrastructure is now in place including flower and veggie gardens with no dig straw gardens well underway and in use the past few years.
A great new addition of a heated jacuzzi, under a new pergola, now covered with shade cloth, creating a great outddoor area to eat, have a beer or to rest, are already in place now.
A brand new sauna aera has been created and is now ready to line with timber and then be put into use as we locate suitable steam equipment if possible this year, 2026
The original cottage celebrated it's centenary in 2019, so you will be living in a very historical property in Tiszaigar, a lovely little 900 poeple village, with over 30 buses daiy, both ways to the bigger city of Tiszafured, population around 10,000 to 11,000 depending upon which figures you find!.
We have converted and renovated an old animal shed into a functioning tool shed and is where the future sauna room, with its own access is located.
The stand alone cottage has a full kitchen, dining and sitting room area.
Up the beautiful hand made wooden staircase, are 3 beds, or 2 beds and a day bed, or pushed together, for a double bed if required.
In the garden area, we grow 4 types of tomatoes, plain potatoes, pumpkins, beetroot, onions, kohlrabi and cucumbers in our wonderful straw, no dig, raised garden beds.
We are moving a few fences, planting lots of new trees and creating a visually attractive space for both volunteers, and passers by, so most work in summer is basically mowing my 2 properties, watering the newly planted connifers and tending gardens and feeding cat while I'm away visiting family for 6 weeks in Australia or other!
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
All up, your volunteering expertise will give you a hands on opportunity to partake in a little corner of a very beautiful area in North Eastern Hungary, close to the Romanian and Slovakian borders.
I will do your washing weekly, change your bed for you, and make up a nice clean bed each week for you, and weekly, help you with your house tidying up and cleaning in the independant cottage.
I also supply all your food needs, a few beers weekly or maybe even a champers tossed in on your birthday or such, wifi, town water, electricity and garbage requirements.
Some of the Work expected to be carried out by all...
Mowing, lots of it, helping out in new garden areas, planting, weeding, maintaining and watering flower gardens, painting, basic repairs, changing high lamp globes etc.
Pruning trees in season.
Having heaps of fun!
Partaking of an odd beer or so after work finishes in summer...the little shop that sells everything is 150 feet up the road!
You can also help, in season, with my own private home made preserves.
This is one of the most exciting, fulfilling and visually satisfying experiences I know of.
The ruby reds of the plums as they are cooked, the deep purple of Elderberry juice, bright red bottled tomatoes, and creamy colour of cooked peaches...
Cherry blossoms...1-10 April,
Cherry eating ...end May,
Plums from June to August,
Tomatoes from May to October,
Peaches September,
Apples Late July to December,
Crab apples Late July to September,
Elderberry flowers to make syrup...April/May,
Elderberries...August/September/October
A visual extravaganza for sure that some experience, but so many unfortunately never ever know of.
You will enjoy feeling satisfied that you really have accomplished something worthwhile every day and you'll sleep really well at night!
So, I am hoping this Workaway Cultural experience appeals to you and really look forwards to having you come and volunteer here for as long as you can... 7 to 9 months is ideal.
*After a month, you receive return train fares to Budapest.
*After 3 months, a week off at your own leisure, with a small food bonus,
*After 6 months, an agreed paid 2 weeks holiday.
Thanks,
Mary.

Accommodation
There is a stand alone furnished cottage, with a huge bedroom up a set of real stairs, and down stairs, a kitchen, sitting area, wardrobes, and bathroom...The bathroom is being completed now for use in April, but volunters use the bathroom in the main house temporarily, plus there is an Aussie surprise outside, a real Aussie Dunny!

What else ...
As far as a cultural experience goes...I can only offer the experience of
an Aussie (Great Granny now) in Hungary :)
There is a larger village, Tiszafured which is 8 klm away by bus, situated on Lake Tisza, with cycling, boating, bush walking, fishing etc. Tiszafured, Lake Tisza areas are a tourist mecca in Summer and are very pretty.
Tiszafured, being a natural therapy spa town, has spa baths, a good train to Budapest every few hours, with frequent bus services from Tiszaigar (my village) to Tiszafured. Approx 17 buses each way, daily.
Tiszaigar is a village of approx 900 people, has basic shops, Doctor, Post Office and Chemist. Tiszafured, a larger town, has 4 big supermarkets, Tesco, Penny, Lidl and Spar, builders co-op shops, PO, ATM'c, Banks, Solicitors, Doctors etc.
Thankyou.
Mary

Puss...A black and white cat,
Poor kitty was delivered on my path, as an abandoned newborn kitty,., 5 years ago, by a village stray who abandoned her. So I had to spoon feed the poor little thing!
She has survived a lot, and is an outside cat, only allowed inside at night, always in her own area, and in winter, obviously.

He ran me off my feet at times and I couldn't stop him working!
He was a very willing worker, cleaned up his tools and workplace after him and over all was a joy to have around.
Hoping he can stay longer next time.
12/10 for Tibi!
I enjoyed all the time what I spent there, Unfortunately it was just 1 week.
We worked together mostly, I was happy because of that.
The village is calm and nice.
