Good but used my truck for something it wasn't intended for without asking
Sam's property is a beautiful section of the desert outside of Taos. The cats – Cleocatra, Miss Oblivion, and Major Tom – and the dogs Odyssey and Captain are adorable characters. My accommodations were basic – a semi-insulated cabin with a bed (no cook stove). All structures on the property were off-grid and to some degree unfinished. (There was
… read more electricity if a generator was running). My cat and I made ourselves at home well due to having everything we needed with us in my car. (I happened to have my own bedsheets - helpful as none were provided). In a separate structure was the kitchen, which I saw to be lacking cleanliness. (The fly infestation was my main qualm.) I sincerely enjoyed working with Sam, who knows a ton about construction, carpentry, and living off-grid. There was a solar shower I could've used; however, the shower stall was unsanitary, and I was uncomfortable stepping foot in it. We were using #redacted# construction materials, so I did my best to wash up at the end of each work day with a bucket and water. Overall, with Sam cooking up hot food morning and night, I was able to enjoy myself and the lovely outdoor environment.

Sam is a great man with a big heart. His pets, two dogs and two cats are the sweetest pets I've ever met. I felt very welcome since the first minute and he offered me a lot of help to fix my car and did the job prefectly.
He is a good cook, foods are really delicious.
his knowledge in car and building amuse you and you wonder what a genius like
… read more him doing in the middle of this place which is so beautiful and peaceful experience.
if you are Ok to lower your expectations and live in the off-grid property, this is a great place to enjoy the sunrise and sunsets and evenings.

Sam has a special spot on the mesa. It is so quiet and peaceful being off grid, and there is a beautiful sunrise every morning, as well as the most stars I think I've seen at night! We enjoyed the nearby hot springs several times in our two week stay.
His two dogs are the best and are always ready for a belly rub, play or a hike on the mesa! He

We accomplished and learned a lot for it being february, and Sam was great at explaining the building process, reasons behind it, and is a very creative and experienced builder. This dome is going to be an amazing building that lasts a long time!
He went above and beyond and even helped fix my car when it had problems, and is very knowledgeable about cars and trucks.
The rio grande gorge is quite an amazing sight, great area to explore on a hike and some world class climbing I hear. You can even walk from his place to the beautiful miners trail! I loved visiting the earthship community, and it was inspiring to see in person and learn more about.
Would definitely recommend to someone interested in off grid living in a beautiful unique high desert landscape. You can only contact Workawayers who have an active membership.

Sam is an absolute genius with natural building of all kinds. The location gorgeous as well, the stars, the sunset and sunrise over the mountains around the mesa. I was looking for a rugged off-grid project to see and help on and this was perfect. No electric, no plumbing. 2 goats, 2 alpacas, 2 dogs, 2 cats .. a true slice of rustic and dusty
