Are you passionate about living in harmony with the natural environment? Are you self motivated to follow that passion into action and collaboration with local villagers to learn together? Are you flexible and open to a range of activities? Do enjoy sharing your knowledge and experience with others? If so, We would love you to come and get involved as part of our grass-roots voluntary-action initiative based in a beautiful coastal village and surf spot in West Java, supporting the the local area towards a more sustainable future and starting to inspire others across Indonesia.
We have an off-grid riverside learning centre with permaculture gardens. There are a wide range of activities that may take place, depending on the contributions and passion of the people involved at the time. Activities may include creative learning activities with local children and adults, organic gardening, traditional construction and maintenance activities, litter clean ups, music sharing activities, yoga shares, traditional martial arts, building bamboo recycling bins and more....
You will be staying in the gardens in a small wooden jungle hut built to provide free accommodation in exchange for an average of 4 hours a day supporting our activities.
We have a small solar PV panel system with batteries for charging phones as well as lights. Our water supply involves pumping water by hand up to a storage tank which then serves our funky spiral bathroom. We also have a pizza oven hand built with clay from the river, traditional bicycles used to explore the local area, and hammocks you can swing in while you watch the sunset over the river and mangroves.

You can learn about traditional rural culture including Indonesian farming life, language, music, martial arts and nature. You will also make new friends from the local area, most of whom will be enthusiastic to share both modern and traditional Indonesian culture with you whilst learning from you about life in other parts of the world, and sharing as many smiles as possible whilst doing it :-)

Our project is a not-for-profit voluntary-action initiative and because we have a wide range of activities we seek to build the tasks you do around you - depending on where your skills and interests lie. We are seeking self-motivated people passionate about environmental conservation, creativity and learning. We are generally looking for people to get involved for 6 weeks or more. In general the longer the better for everyone involved, however we occasionally make exceptions to this, for example if you have particular skills/experience or specific activities are scheduled, so don't be shy to send us a message if you want to join us :-)
You will be staying in the organic forest gardens in wooden jungle huts built as bedrooms for people helping with our activities. We generally accommodate 2 residential visitors at a time, occasionally up to 4 if pairs/couples.
As well the opportunity to swim in the River and relax with new friends and butterflies in our gardens, there is also a lot to see in the local region around Batukaras which has many stunning natural places to visit, including a green emerald canyon, several waterfalls, a national Park, wild beaches, mountains & surfspots.
There is a wonderful relaxed beach-vibe around Batukaras and if you're an early riser you can choose to watch sunrise over the rice paddies or the ocean, where you can often also see volcanoes framing the backdrop...
