    Description

    My name is Daniel and since 2014 that I have been learning about permaculture principles and sustainable ways of living. I volunteered for a few years in the Azores and then around South America for more than 2 years to get the tools to now settle and start my own project in Pico. I currently work as a mountain guide at Pico mountain (the highest point of Portugal) and I am also a saxophone teacher, taking currently a break to focus on building my house.
    My current project is to create a self sufficient and sustainable life style in this island following permaculture principles and in tune with the local community. I am currently building my own house, and farming organically. At the moment I live in a house close to the land where I'll be moving in during 2024. I own a few plots of land around the island and all of them have their specific needs and characteristics, creating different challenges and demanding different types of work.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

    I have been living in Pico since 2009 and I already feel part of the local community. I collaborate with the local philharmonic bands, folk dance groups, municipalities and help friends with their projects. I can share with you my perception and experience living in Pico, which is sometimes quite different from what you would see as a tourist. I will also, very gladly, share any knowledge you might be interested in, like farming, natural building, music and others.

  • Help

    Help

    Currently the help I need will alternate between building the house, farming and improving the land.
    Depending on the time of the year you will be here, you will be able to:
    - Do woodwork, either on the house or on the land;
    - Seed/plant/harvest vegetables and fruits;
    - Graft trees;
    - Prune trees;
    - Build stone walls;
    - Cut down wild trees;
    - Weed and mulch;
    - Plan future projects;
    - Be creative on the land:
    - And others...

    Please be aware, that most of the tasks are physically demanding and that it rains quite often here. So, please be open and ready to work some days under the rain and to push yourself physically.

    Accommodation

    The house where I live is small but cozy, with 2 rooms, 1 toilet and an a living room/kitchen. You will have your own room and therefore privacy.
    I will provide the food for 3 meals per day, 7 days a week and they will be prepared together as part of the co-living, not being considered as work hours.
    The cleaning of the house follows the same principle as the food preparation, we will get together once a week for less than one hour to tidy up the house to leave it cozy and clean for us to enjoy it.
    I'm currently taking care of a friend's cat and friends often visit me with their dogs, so it is important that you feel comfortable with animals around. They are lovely and very friendly ;)

    What else ...

    All around Pico you will find yourself surrounded by nature with amazing forests to breathe fresh air, beautiful trails to hike and unique natural swimming pools to connect with the sea. I have several friends from different parts of the world who help me weekly either farming or building. You will get to know them and to share some nice time when we get together for fun, like jamming, firebones, etc...
