Our one-year old hostel in Santa Fe de Antioquia, a beautiful colonial town an hour outside Medellin, is founded on values of eco-friendliness and inclusiveness. Based in a handsome colonial building in the historic centre of Santa Fe de Antioquia, the hostel has its own swimming pool, outdoor hammock zone and poolside bar. Santa Fe is located on the banks of the Cauca River and is surrounded by rolling hills and mountains. It has a year-round warm and sunny climate – perfect poolside weather! We aim to offer a more comfortable environment than many backpacker hostels (please check out our photos), and have as many beds in private rooms as we do in dorms. There is usually a mix of foreign travellers and Colombian tourists at our hostel.

We are keen to offer our volunteers a truly memorable and enriching experience. As a volunteer here you will be warmly welcomed by Laura and her family, who are keen to get to know volunteers and exchange Spanish language skills for English. We want you to feel part of our team – this is a fledgling family-run business and we have put all our energy into making it a wonderful place to be. As the first hostel in Santa Fe de Antioquia (others are now springing up) our mission is to put this picturesque town on the backpacker map. You are equal members of our team and we want you to feel integral in shaping this hostel’s future with us - we are open to receiving ideas from you on how to improve the running of our hostel, and we recognise the invaluable assistance that you offer us as a volunteer.
There will be ample opportunities to meet and share with travellers from all over the world, as well as with Colombians. And for anyone interested in knowing what it's really like to run a hostel, we can show you the ropes. This volunteering opportunity is for those seeking peace and tranquility rather than for party animals. It is for those wishing to see a side of the real Colombia, to live with real Colombians, in a beautiful colonial town close to one of Colombia's finest cities - Medellin - but in a tranquil environment surrounded by green mountains and with a pool in the back garden!
We are mainly looking for volunteers to help us with manning the reception, but also with online marketing, publicity and social media. Volunteers with expertise in sustainability who could help us to make our hostel more sustainable are also welcome to get in touch. We usually have a rota of four volunteers split between weekday and weekend shifts. Those who work weekends will have the week free, and vice versa. Weekday shifts are 6 hours per day from Tuesday through Friday. Weekend shifts are 8 hours per day Saturday through Monday (i.e. both total 24 hours per week). However, volunteers are encouraged to spend as much time as they wish at the hostel when off-duty - we are always thrilled to share and spend time with those staying with us! It is essential that you speak at least basic Spanish - the better your Spanish is, the more useful you will be to us.
We ask volunteers to stay with us for a minimum of one month, but longer-term stays are also greatly encouraged - we much prefer for our volunteers to meaningfully integrate themselves and become true members of our team, something that is facilitated by a longer stay. We are also open to hearing from volunteers if they have particular talents, skills or interests. If there is a way to include these as part of our exchange then we are keen to do so. You can also be our guinea pigs for new tours and activities in the area, if you wish :)
Spanish (and a tiny bit of English!!)
In return for your help we offer you a bed in one of our dormitories (which each have their own private shower), breakfast each morning (usually fresh fruit, muesli, yoghurt, coffee and boiled eggs), free wifi, access to our swimming pool, access to our laundry facilities – and a very warm invitation to exchange language skills with us if you wish to improve your Spanish!
Santa Fe de Antioquia is one of Colombia's best preserved historic colonial towns, there are many opportunities for trekking, mountain biking or horse riding in the surrounding countryside. There is also an annual calendar of cultural events in Santa Fe including a famous weeklong independent film festival, as well as outdoor concerts and theatre. But Medellin is also only a little over an hour away by buses which leave every 15 minutes 7 days a week, so it's easy to pop into town for a day or two if you fancy being in the city for a change. Antioquia is one of Colombia's most beautiful regions, and Santa Fe is a great base for exploring this gorgeous corner of the country.
