We'd love to have you come stay at our jungle home! We are laid back and love to teach others as well as learn from your experiences and have your dedicated support. We have fruit trees, papayas, bananas, green veggies, yams, cassava, chillies, and pineapples (although the jungle is always reclaiming our veggie patches or the rats are eating it ). We're excited for you to see Lantau Island where we live (called the 'green lung' of Hong Kong).
Our jungle garden is literally across the street from the beach and in a beautiful natural area with no neighbors. We have a natural stream fed swimming pool, terraced gardens, some lovely pets, and plenty of forest and wildlife around. We're on the same island as the HK airport, but it feels like a whole different world.
For the past 17years I have been living on Lantau Island, coming from Germany originally. My three mixed asian teenagers have grown up in nature, playing, nurturing and looking after creatures with me together. We respect wild life a lot and would never kill any animals. My kids and me share the space around us with all sorts of insects, reptiles, amphibians, birds, mammals etc. Be prepared to be part of it! I really mean it, you have to be able to handle and be kind to all the wildlife, otherwise this place is not for you. If you are open to it, you will be rewarded with discovering immense and flourishing biodiversity.
P.S. This is a vegetarian, lactose free household and I am gluten intolerant. Just that you know ;)

We run permaculture/gardening courses and you are welcome to sit in on them for free as long as you're helping out when we ask. This is a great learning opportunity as the garden has been permaculture designed for the past 8 years and there are many mature systems in place!
Our island is covered in buddhist temples and shrines (the closest one is a 5 min walk from our place) and there are tons of great tourist options for the island (Big Buddha, Cable Cars, Tai O Stilt Village, Waterfall hikes, etc). The Lantau community is really diverse and quirky so you will never know what you can learn.
Our biggest need is with permaculture gardening and construction/building. Besides finishing of the renovation of a little house your handy skills are always very welcome. We need help with building natural walls, fixing a shed, redoing/painting walls, putting up a roof and building bamboo trellises and possibly some form of pagoda- an fairly open but covered retreat place for various purposes.
As the garden is purposely left to maintain itself we only need help with accumulating more organic materials, digging holes for planting more fruit trees, watering during very dry weather and sometimes cutting and trimming back the jungle encroaching.
Due to numerous animals there are always jobs to be done around them plus general maintenance of the site including the houses.
Any permaculture/ sustainable ideas are welcome!
Once you arrive, you'll get your own little house to stay in with a bed, air conditioner, wifi and electricity. The compost toilet you find in the lower part of the garden. There s clean stream water nearby ( that we are drinking too). Shower facilities and public toilets are 3 minutes away at the beach.
Our island is 80% protected parkland and one of the oldest geological islands in south Asia, so there s great hiking, Buddhist and cultural sites, beaches, history and adventure tourism. When you aren t working anywhere on the island is less than half an hour bus ride away and getting downtown to the urban chaos takes less than an hour.
