    Description

We are a family of four living and growing food in the woods on the beautiful Canadian Shield. Our home is near many lovely lakes and rivers (including Algonquin Park) for swimming, kayaking and other outdoor activities. We love our friendly and fun community. Barb homeschools the kids and grows food. Ian has a home-office job. The kids are 7 and 11 and are active and creative. We both have many years of experience in the arts (music and dance) and are still somewhat active in these areas. We have 25 acres of woods to care for, build trails through, garden in and listen to.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Learn about permaculture gardening and forest gardening techniques, learn about food preservation and local medicinal plants. We are friendly and curious and there are many community events, potlucks, music jams and other activities to connect with. There is also a lot of outdoor active tourism available in the area with Algonquin Park nearby and some river kayaking outfits very close as well. We provide the experience of living in closer relationship to the land.

  • Help

    Help

We'd love your help with gardening, preserving the harvest, trail-building and general property maintenance. In the spring this will involve digging, moving compost around, planting, weeding, brush clearing, stacking wood etc. Later in the summer this will involve weeding, harvesting, processing herbs and vegetables, stacking wood, brush clearing etc.
Your time may include some wild-harvesting, cleaning chores, light construction tasks and, if it's a good match, some activities with the kids. Some tasks will be done together and in some cases your help will be independent.
You would be a good fit if you are mature, independent, energetic, can cook and clean, like kids, are adventurous and active, and can take initiative to help make our busy lives a little easier!

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

We have a comfortable, modern cabin on the property. It has a queen sized bed in the bedroom and a double bed in the loft. In the loft is Ian's office area as well. We can offer the cabin for your stay and it has a small kitchen and living area, open concept. The bedroom will be your private space but the loft will have to be used by Ian 9-5 on weekdays as he needs the office for work. The cabin has electricity, wifi, running water, toilet, fridge, stove.

Alternately, camping is available on the property or space for a camper van. We will be installing a brand new outhouse and preparing campsites in April 2026.

Breakfast will be prepared for you. Usually, oatmeal with a variety of fruits and nuts and seeds. Sometimes pancakes, eggs, toast.

Lunch, we will provide supplies and you're on your own for preparation.

Dinners will be family style and you may be asked to assist in preparing the meal. We eat healthy and whenever we can we are using foods harvested on our own land or nearby. Most of our meals are vegetarian but we sometimes use pork that local folks raise for us at their farm.

There are many food sensitivities in our household so don't hold back in telling us yours and we will accommodate. Gluten free options are usually available.
