We are a family living in Muara Dua, a small town in South of Sumatra. The area where we live is known for agriculture, especially coffee plantation. Also we are rich in flora and fauna, however the nature here is increasingly threatened due to expansive palm oil plantation and increasing population. The saying goes that in the old days, local saw Sumatran tigers quite often. But sadly, nowadays we almost never seen them.
Our goal is to be self-sufficient and to set up a sustainable small scale tourism and education center surrounded by permacultural farm. We would like to ask you to share your valuable knowledge with the locals. Our community can use your help to make our way of living more environmental friendly, and to be able to support ourselves economically. We are lacking the knowledge and therefore would like to invite volunteers with happy spirit that can help us. We believe that with our small project we can contribute, albeit a little, in sustaining beautiful Sumatra with its flora and fauna.
Our immediate project is to set up a basic rain water collection so it can be used for watering the gardens & farm, washing etc.

We need various types of help. We are in the beginning of our project. At this moment we need mostly volunteers who can help us with day-to-day activities, such as gardening, farming, cleaning, advising us with permaculture projects, promoting our guesthouse, etc.
Types of skills that you can share with us:
- Agriculture, inlcudig permaculture
- Water management
- Waste management
- (digital) marketeers
- Handy man/woman
- Construction builders
- Interior designers
- (English) teachers
- World travelers
We need volunteers who can set up a environmental friendly farming where we can be self-sufficient and at the same time restoring and preserving our land. Volunteers will help on building permaculture systems around the property and perform general maintenance and repairs.
For example: building solar hot water, building eco/compost toilet, waste management, drinking water technology from the rain, general cleaning, etc.
Gardening and garden maintenance, including weeding, watering, potting up seedlings, plant identification and labeling and sorting seed for our seed bank.
Giving advise on running our guesthouse. Do digital marketing to promote our guesthouse. Our rooms are still very basic and we lack the know-how to meet tourist/backpackers standards. It can be some little things, for example separating wash, using natural materials/furniture, avoiding using plastic, building or repairing things, hospitality standard, etc.
On the long run we want to set up an educational program for locals on permaculture and teaching English to local children.
Our place is for happy, adventurous, and curious spirit who enjoy remote, natural places and takes initiative that can improve our project.
Volunteers will be working at least 10-15 hours a week (2-3 hours/day) at our place. Simple accommodation (private room) will be provided in our house. You can use your own outside private bathroom, which is very basic .
Volunteers are required to cover their personal expenses as well as meals. A filling meal can be purchased in the neighborhood for a very cheap price.
You will need to bring your own mosquito net (if you want to use one).
You may cook your dinner in turn at the kitchen. You'll be welcome to pick vegetables and herbs from the gardens. You'll be sharing our family kitchen.
We'd prefer if you brought your own towels. We have a limited quantity of sheets and pillowcases and you'll need to be responsible for washing them or having them laundered while you're here. You'll also need to ensure the bed is stripped when you leave and, where possible, that the sheets are washed and put out to dry. You are also responsible in cleaning your own room and shared spaces.
We kindly ask that you take joint responsibility for keeping the place clean and nice for all to use. We hope you’ll treat it as your own home, and be our ‘eyes and ears’ if there is anything out of place, or that needs repair.
You will have to come by yourself to our place. We can give you advice how to get here or pick you up at the Muara Dua bus stop.
