    Description

We were established in 2010 with the aim to sustain and help the young people to integrate in the community, in Baia Mare (Maramures county), a small town in the picturesque mountainous northern part of Romania. From young volunteers we have now reached the status of professional workers with a great desire to offer personalised activities for the community's members, to support their personal and professional development. The proposed activities get our beneficiaries in contact with various cultures, discover new ways of spending the free time in an enjoyable and educational way, as well as it allows them to explore their own community through the eyes and perceptions of foreigners.
Starting with 2016 we are promoting the volunteering concept at the local and international level, in particular in the sport area. We want to promote sports both at the grassroots level by organising various sportive/movement activities, and to support our town's sport clubs in gaining more visibility through photography, videography or graphic and design materials.
Despite having an on-going collaboration with the senior male volleyball club, we also collaborate with various other sports such as different types of martial arts (karate, taekwando, MMA, kickboxing, Muay-Thai, etc), handball, gymnastic, badminton, football or rugby. There is also the possibility to extend the sport offer as the town offers plenty of options, including nature-connected ones.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

We are hosting often people from all around Europe and that's what makes our work rich in cultural exchanges, in the multicultural environment Baia Mare already has. From sharing the house and living together, to cooking typical dishes, talking about each's country and traditions, or even visiting the area to get a deeper knowledge of the local culture, you have the possibility as well to share their own culture with the public, teach their mother tongue, organise language exchanges, movie nights from their own cinema or food presentations. Needless to say is the encounter of various cultural presences in Baia Mare given by the international volunteers hosted by other local NGOs.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

We offer accommodation in the centre of the city, in an apartment with 4 bedrooms that can accommodate up to 8 people. The rooms are shared according to the gender, but the house can accommodate people of both genders. The volunteer can be hosted alone in the room or share it with another person. Other inhabitants of the apartment can be other volunteers, interns or students from our association or of the local partners’.
The living room is a common space for all the inhabitants of the house and has a closed balcony (smoking area).
The apartment has 2 bathrooms, 1 with a bath tube and 1 with a shower. The kitchen is fully equipped with dishes, pots, cutlery, oven, stove, microwave and 2 refrigerators.
There is a washing machine available and iron. There is high speed Wi-Fi available in the entire apartment. The apartment has its own central heating system that provides heat and how water. The apartment is equipped and furnished with all the needed items and provides the comfort level possible in the area.
The city has several big supermarkets in a lot of its areas, thus wherever located, the apartments have in the nearby supermarkets and small neighbourhood shops for the daily supplies, some even opened 24/7. The workawayers are responsible for maintaining the accommodation place all in order.
For the workawayers coming through the EU funded projects, there is a monthly food allowance given and each has to manage their shopping and eating on their own. For workawayers outside the EU projects, food will be provided.
The important buildings such as the bus or train station, hospitals or cultural buildings are easy to be reached. Despite the fact that the city is small and every place is easy to reach by foot, the local transportation is developed as well and the taxi is safe and cheap.
The working areas are in the neighbourhood of the apartment, therefore transportation is required only in specific situations. The local transportation is not needed on a permanent basis as the city is small and easy to be reached on foot. In case the activity requires so, tickets/monthly passes for the public transportation are covered by us or specific transfers with the association’s/member’s private cars. There is the possibility to rent a bicycle during the stay.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

Baia Mare is located in Maramures, a very green mountainous area of Romania. The city offers a variety of activities such as cultural-historical (museums, touristic objectives, theatre and puppet theatre, occasionally concerts and local festivals), social (pubs, cafes, clubs, cinema), educational (universities, lots of NGOs with public events) or natural (situated at the outskirts of hills and mountains offers many hiking and trekking routes from the city, parks, lakes nearby).
We often organise socialising evenings like movie nights, team building, board games or language exchanges, as well as there is the possibility to join the other events from the city, often organised by foreign volunteers (accessible to everyone in English).
The area is best known for its landscapes, wooden building structures and the beauty of the local traditions that have been kept alive until today. The Merry Cementery and 14-17th Century wooden churches (UNESCO patrimony), waterfalls, handicrafts and old style living are waiting for you to discover it while enjoying the local gastronomy with fresh products, specific for the mountain area.
Being close to the borders of Hungary and Ukraine (both at 1h), workawayers can think of planning city breaks in the nearby countries too (Budapest, Debrecen, Pecs, Balaton Lake, Szeged for the Szeged Festival / Lviv).
Baia Mare being on the external part of Transylvania, still offers the possibility to reach the central part where lots of medieval remaining tell their history (Cluj Napoca, Oradea, Arad, Timisoara, Alba Iulia, Sighisoara, Sibiu, Brasov and many others).
Baia Mare is connected to Bucharest by airport and a direct night train. Cluj Napoca and Budapest are as well a good option for the travelling in Europe as it has connections with plenty of countries, both of them being connected by bus directly with the airport. There are also various direct trains in the area (to Timisoara and the Western part, to Cluj an the central part) and buses connections covering the entire country. For the adventurous ones, there are various bike routes going up north, hitch-hiking is or car sharing (often available in summers). There is as well the possibility to rent a car and travel on your own.
