the Farm is a small 107 acre family owned farm that is new to the farming scene. We purchased our acreage as raw land 10 years ago and have built the farm on the sloping hillsides above the North Barriere River. We are working hard to develop our farm into a place where animal husbandry and the local ecology co-exist in a balanced state. To this end, freshly planted pastures blend with naturally forested areas to provide ideal pasture for growing sheep. We have a small flock of 20 ewes who work for their food and indulge in the blend of cultivated grasses and legumes, as well as wild, natural forage. We designed a custom built chicken barn in such a way that small flocks of chickens and turkeys have the perfect combination of access to shelter and fresh pasture. Our 3 sows and their piglets are raised in a wooded pasture where they root, wallow, forage and play. We also enjoy fresh eggs every day from our laying hens, who have their own big yard to scratch and peck around in. There is a small family of pet ducks that play in the puddles and go wherever they want to go.
We are not a certified organic farm. We do, however, embrace many of the principals associated with organic farming and are trying to create a sustainable, healthy farm. We have a large vegetable garden and enjoy growing our own food. We try to grow enough to sustain us through the winter, with extra crops that we donate to the local food bank and share with neighbours and friends. We use natural fertilizers (our own animal manure) and rotate our crops throughout the garden every year to maximize the soil's potential. As we live in a cooler mountain region we are always experimenting to see what grows well and trying creative strategies to prolong the growing season. We sow our own seedlings, and usually have the garden fully in by June.
Throughout the summer the garden requires constant tending (weeding, harvesting, watering) and in August and September the evening hours are busy with storing food away for the winter (freezing, canning, and root cellaring). Willing hands to help in the gardening and harvesting are always welcome! As we are a developing farm, we spend countless hours through the spring, summer, and fall cleaning brush, picking rocks, mending fences, putting up fences, and trying to improve pastures. We do a lot of the work by hand, but we do also use machinery to help us with the heavy work. We always appreciate help with the manual labour chores. No experience is necessary, but good physical health is a must! The winter snows usually start in December and begin to melt by mid-February (which brings the spring muck - make sure you have a good pair of gum boots!). Most winter mornings are busily spent shoveling snow and caring for the animals. The afternoons are a great time for snow shoeing, cross country skiing, baking bread, sewing, or working in the shop.
We live in a newly built and not quite finished house 16 kms outside of Barriere. We have a spare bedroom in the house for guests to stay (singles or couple). It has its own sitting area and private bathroom so is a cozy place for settling in and following COVID protocols as required.
We try to produce most of the food that we eat. Depending on the season, our dining table boasts fresh or frozen farm produce, fruit (berries, apples, plums, cherries) home grown meat (lamb, pork, beef, chicken, turkey), fresh eggs... We do rely on the local grocery stores for sundries such as salt, flour and oil. We would welcome interested volunteers thoughout the year.
There is always work to be done and new things to learn. The ideal volunteer for us would commit to staying for at least four weeks (but longer is welcome), would be of sound body and mind, and most importantly, would be willing to fully participate in our farm life. To let you know a little bit about us, Dan's career as a certified meat cutter spanned 30 years and he is now self- employed as a full time farmer. Angela is a registered nurse and works part time to support their farming habit.

We also have an upright piano in the living room that would love to make music on hot afternoons (or whenever!).

It is important to know that our farm is outside of the cell service area and our internet is available but limited to texting and light surfing of the internet. We do not have the bandwidth for Netflix or streaming, and skyping, whatsap etc. must be used sparingly.
