  Description

  We are a couple with a 2 year old girl. We both dedicate ourselves to the field of education, but at the moment we are taking a break to dedicate ourselves to raising children and building our own house in Mendata, Bizkaia.
  
  We started by laying the foundations and then they built the wooden structure and the roof. In the last year we have worked placing the straw bales, making the exterior coatings (clay and lime mortar), structure of the interior partition, electricity, plumbing...
  
  
  Somos una pareja con una niña de 2 años. Los dos nos dedicamos al ámbito de la educación, pero en este momento estamos haciendo un parón para dedicarnos a la crianza y a la construcción de nuestra propia casa en Mendata, Bizkaia.
  
  Comenzamos realizando la cimentación y después nos construyeron la estructura de madera y el tejado. En el último año hemos trabajado colocando las balas de paja, realizando los revestimientos exteriores (morteros de arcilla y cal), estructura de la tabiquería interior, electricidad, fontanería...

  Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

  In our house, the volunteers will have the option to learn and experiment with everything that bioconstruction entails: thatch walls, cladding, ... We also find it important and enriching to be able to share moments and experiences between our family and the volunteers. In addition, we are in a sensational place to get to know the Basque Country and its cultural, natural and gastronomic wealth. Mendata is located in the Urdaibai biosphere reserve, one of the most beautiful areas of Bizkaia. The closest large towns are Zornotza (15min) and Gernika (18min). Bilbao is 35 minutes away while Donosti and Gasteiz are approximately 1 hour away. We are open to accompany people who come to know the environment. At Medata we live in Basque, so volunteers can have an approach to that language if they are interested.

  En nuestra casa las personas voluntarias tendrán opción a aprender y experimentar con todo lo que conlleva la bioconstrucción: muros de paja, revestimientos, ...
  
  También nos parece importante y enriquecedor poder compartir momentos y vivencias entre nuestra familia y las personas voluntarias.
  
  Además, nos encontramos en un paraje sensacional para poder conocer el País Vasco y su riqueza cultural, natural y gastronómica. Mendata se encuentra en la reserva de la biosfera de Urdaibai una de las zonas más bonitas de Bizkaia. Los pueblos grandes más cercanos son Zornotza (15min) y Gernika (18min). Bilbao se encuentra a 35 minutos mientras que Donosti y Gasteiz están, aproximadamente, a 1 hora y poco. Estamos abiertas a acompañar a las personas que vengan a conocer el entorno.
  
  En Medata vivimos en euskera, por lo que las personas voluntarias podrán tener un acercamiento a dicho idioma si les interesa.

  Help

  In these winter months, we have to move forward with the interior coatings (clay mortar) and the construction of a thermal inertia stove. That is why we are looking for people with experience in masonry or construction of inertial stoves.
  
  En estos meses invernales, nos toca avanzar con los revestimientos interiores (mortero de arcilla) y la construcción de una estufa de inercia térmica. Es por ello que buscamos personas con experiéncia en albañilería o construcción de estufas de inercia.

  Accommodation

  During this time it rains a lot, it is cold and it gets dark early, therefore, we believe that our caravan is not suitable to welcome volunteers and we would look for decent accommodation for them. That is why we ask for experience in the tasks that we have to carry out or people who have their own motorhome or van in which they know they will be comfortable despite the weather. We have a dry toilet for volunteers. The meals will be made by us for everyone in our house and the breakfasts and dinners are made by each one on their own but at our own expense; that is, we pay for the meals that are needed for breakfasts and dinners.
  
  Durante esta época llueve bastante, hace frío y oscurece pronto, por lo tanto, creemos que nuestra caravana no es adecuada para acoger a personas voluntarias y buscaríamos un alojamiento digno para ellas. Por eso pedimos experiencia en las labores que nos toca desempeñar o personas que dispongan de su propia autocaravana o furgoneta en la que sepan que van a estar cómodas a pesar del clima. Disponemos de váter seco para las personas voluntarias. Las comidas las realizaremos nosotros para todos en en nuestra casa y los desayunos y las cenas las hacemos cada uno por su lado pero a nuestra cuenta; es decir, pagamos nosotros las comidas que se necesiten para los desayunos y cenas.

  What else ...

  We live in a very quiet neighborhood and in contact with nature from which you can take very beautiful walks. To be able to move to nearby towns a vehicle is necessary. Public transport is 10 minutes away by car and from there you can go to Gernika-Bermeo or to Zornotza and Bilbao. We are in the Urdaibai biosphere reserve, a wonderful enclave where there are activities for all tastes: gastronomy, sports, history, beach, mountains ...
  
  Vivimos en un barrio muy tranquilo y en contacto con la naturaleza desde el cual se pueden realizar paseos muy bonitos. Para poder moverse a los pueblos cercanos es necesario un vehículo. El transporte público está a 10 minutos en coche y desde allí se puede ir hacia Gernika-Bermeo o hacia Zornotza y Bilbao.
  
  Nos encontramos en la reserva de la biosfera de Urdaibai, un enclave maravilloso donde hay actividades para todos los gustos: gastronomia, deporte, historia, playa, monte...
