We are a French Lithuanian couple looking for help to build a bakery close to Vilnius in Lithuania.
We used to live in France in Normandy (Rouen) and decided after finishing a one year trip to start living in Vilnius.
We like travelling, learning languages, reading, starting crazy projects. We have ecological ideas that we try to implement in our daily life : we do our own soap, washing machine liquids, yogurt and bread of course. We try to be tolerant and refuse any kind of extremism :)
During your stay, you can experience both rural and city life in Lithuania.
You can learn also some simple building techniques.
We will be happy to share ideas and experiences around a good meal with you.
We are looking for volunteers to help us build a bakery close to Vilnius.
We are a French-Lithunian couple and we bought 1.5 years ago a piece of land located 20 km from Vilnius close to Rukainai, in a typical Lithuanian village with wooden houses, storks (in summer time), fields and forest around.
Our plan is to build a traditional bakery over there (with wooden fire, natural yeast, organic flour) and to sell our bread in Vilnius on farmer markets. In the long term, the project would be to grow our own wheat / rye, grind it and bake bread locally.
We started really from scratch, there was nothing on our land. Now, we have dry toilets, a well for water (that we dug ourselves with a simple shovel and a lot of motivation), electricity, a wooden shelter (to protect from the rain, the sun and to store all our tools and materials) and the main building - the bakery - is partially constructed.
The future bakery is a two floor house constructed with a wooden structure based on a Canadian method called “the GREB Technique” (check out on Wikipedia for more info) that I found really appropriate for self-constructor like us. Currently, we are insulating the walls with straw that we have bought from local farmers.
About our building philosophy: we try to source locally our building materials. Wood comes from a sawmill 6km away from our land, straw from fields 30km around. We do not have so much money and do not want to borrow from the bank. Therefore we do a lot by ourselves: it goes a bit slower but we are learning by doing. We are of course ready to share this experience accumulated while building!
Depending when you will arrive, we will be finishing to fill in the walls with the straw and the mortar, be building the wood fired oven, fixing some electricity, plumbery or final "details" (wooden cladding, stairs to be built, interior walls, ceramics).
You do not need any specific knowledge to join, just good will to help. We will give you gloves and some clothes if you do not have anything. If you have specific knowledge (stairs building, wood fire oven building, electricity or plumbery), you are more than welcome as we have very little experience in these fields.
Regarding the schedule, you can join us 3-4 days a week as you wish. The rest of the time, you can visit Vilnius and the surroundings.
Possible dates of arrival :
- possible from 17/05/2019 till mid-June : mainly for finishing filling the walls with straw and mortar
- from mid-June : we will probably start building the wood fired oven (masonry)
